The HVAC Mechanic I performs skilled installation, maintenance, and repair of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems in City facilities. This role follows safety standards while supporting senior technicians through preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and documentation. Key responsibilities include servicing HVAC systems, such as air handlers, chillers, and ductwork, as well as replacing filters and cleaning coils. The mechanic assists in estimating labor and materials, maintains tools and inventory, and ensures compliance with relevant codes. The position requires a commitment to learning, using building automation systems, and interpreting blueprints for diagnostics and repairs, all crucial for maintaining comfort and efficiency in facilities. This position reports to an assigned supervisor.ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

- Troubleshoots and repairs HVAC components such as motors, pumps, compressors, thermostats, coils, and electrical controls
- Reads and interprets blueprints, wiring diagrams, and system schematics to perform diagnostics and repairs
- Replaces filters, belts, refrigerants, and cleans condenser/evaporator coils in accordance with maintenance schedules
- May install refrigerant lines, electrical wiring, and ventilation systems to code
- Uses automated building management systems (BAS) and digital controls for system operation and performance checks
- Cleans and maintains shop, vehicle, electrical equipment, and personal protective equipment

EMERGENCY RESPONSE STATUS: As a condition of employment, City of Largo employees will be required to work as directed during an undeclared and/or a declared emergency. All employees are subject to recall around the clock for emergency response operations, which may require irregular work hours, work at locations other than the normal work location, and may include duties other than those specified in the official job description.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or GED required
- Two (2) years of experience as a helper in a skilled trade; or an equivalent combination of training and experience; or completion of a vocational or apprentice program in plumbing maintenance or installation
- Valid Driver's License
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Ability to commit to and continuously practice and demonstrate the City's values for integrity, collaboration, passion, and creativity
- Strong understanding of HVAC systems, including chillers, cooling towers, boilers, and digital/pneumatic control systems
- Knowledge of tools, materials, safety procedures, and HVAC codes and standards
- Ability to diagnose system malfunctions and perform maintenance and repairs effectively
- Competent in reading technical manuals, schematics, and blueprints
- Capable of working independently or as part of a team under general supervision
- Ability to perform physically demanding tasks and work in confined spaces
WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Work Environment: 95% inside a climate-controlled building; 5% outside, including driving. Work performed indoors and outdoors in various weather conditions, including heat, humidity, rain, or cold; may involve work in confined spaces, at heights, or around active equipment.
Physical Requirements: The essential functions of the job require: sitting approximately two (2) hours per day, standing approximately three (3) hours per day, and walking approximately three (3) hours per day. The job also requires frequent: bending/stooping, grasping, kneeling, reaching, repetitive motion, and lifting/carrying objects weighing up to 15 pounds, with occasional: climbing, fine manipulations, pushing, and routinely lifting/carrying objects weighing up to 45 pounds; the ability to work with arms extended over head or below feet for extended periods of time; the ability to manipulate small objects with hands and fingers. Possess dexterity and agility to work and maneuver in and around equipment, piping, or other tight spaces. Physical requirements are often performed in confined areas, while standing on ladders or other lifting devices, or in excavated and uneven areas. On rare occasions the work requires: crawling, pulling, and lifting/carrying objects weighing more than 45 pounds.
Sensory Requirements: Hearing: Ability to detect proper equipment operation and understand what others are saying in normal conversation and over the noise caused by construction equipment in person or on the telephone. Speaking: Ability to communicate orally with others and speak effectively on the phone. Seeing: Ability to see and read computer monitor screens, operate a vehicle, and read normal and/or fine print. The ability to perform work using tactile sensory skills, without visual observation, of some facet of work.
Driving Requirements: Requires occasional driving and a valid Florida Driver's License.
Technology: The work requires the ability to operate various electronic devices, including telephones, smartphones, tablets, photocopiers, printers, desktop and laptop computers, and calculators, as well as all associated software. It also requires proficiency with computer hardware and software programs, including word processing, spreadsheets, database applications, internet applications, and database management.
Other Machines and Tools: Operates BAS systems and digital thermostats. Uses refrigerant recovery units, pressure gauges, vacuum pumps, brazing tools, hand tools, power tools, and lift equipment.
