Complex Assets Manager
Kansas City, MO
Job Type
Full-time
Description

This pivotal role leads the lifecycle management of complex, non-cash charitable gifts and investments - including privately held businesses, limited partnerships, real estate, and other illiquid assets. With a sharp focus on financial integrity and regulatory compliance, the Complex Assets Manager ensures accurate valuation, reporting, and disposition of these assets in alignment with GAAP, IRS regulations, and audit standards.

Acting as a strategic connector across development, legal, investment, finance, and external advisors, this individual safeguards organizational risk while delivering exceptional donor support. The role is instrumental in preparing Level 3 fair value disclosures and rollforwards for audited financials, reinforcing the organization's commitment to transparency and excellence in philanthropic stewardship.

The position is based in Kansas City, MO and reports to the Senior-Vice President of Finance. This salaried, exempt employee works in the office but has the potential to work hybrid after a successful in-office training period.

Responsibilities

  • Asset Acceptance & Onboarding: Support due diligence for new complex asset gifts (e.g., valuation documentation, ownership structures, legal review). Coordinate onboarding of assets into internal and third-party tracking systems with accurate classification, cost basis, restrictions, and valuation inputs. Establish and document accounting treatment for each asset class (donated vs. purchased, income-producing vs. non-income-producing, etc.).
  • Tracking & Valuation: Assist in maintaining accurate and auditable records of all complex assets, including ownership status, valuation updates, and liquidity events. Coordinate periodic valuation updates with external appraisers, fund sponsors, or internal stakeholders to comply with GAAP fair value hierarchy (Level 3 inputs). Assist in maintaining the Level 3 asset rollforward schedule required for financial statement disclosures, including purchases, sales, gains/losses, and transfers.
  • Accounting & Reporting: Ensure complex assets are properly reflected on the general ledger and financial statements, including unrealized gains/losses and deferred revenue or expense items. Prepare supporting schedules and documentation for external audits and tax filings (e.g., IRS Form 990, 8283/8282, UBIT exposure). Collaborate with fund accountants to align fund-level accounting entries with entity-level reporting and donor-specific records.
  • Operational Oversight: Track asset-related cash flows (e.g., rental income, dividends, capital calls, sale proceeds) and ensure proper allocation to relevant donor-advised funds. Monitor holding periods, exit strategies, restrictions, and donor instructions; ensure timely and compliant asset dispositions. Support legal and investment teams on transaction execution, and partnership distributions.
  • Cross-Functional Support: Liaise with development and donor services to explain timelines, risks, and reporting for complex assets. Work closely with legal and compliance to identify and mitigate regulatory, reputational, and operational risks. Contribute to policy updates and process documentation for complex asset acceptance, valuation, and stewardship.
