Develops, implements, evaluates and revises plan of care based on physical, psychosocial, spiritual, and educational needs of the patient/family. Assesses patient during Preoperative through post-operative stages and monitors for changes that may hinder recovery. Must be competent in starting IV’s, educating patients and families on procedures and medications, monitoring of sedation level, body temperature, blood loss and transfusions, cardiac monitoring, and drawing of specimens. Collaborates with staff, physicians, and other disciplines to provide quality care delivery. Must have knowledge of ventilating patients and
maintaining of airways. Maintains clinical knowledge and skills competency to facilitate patient care in accordance with current standards of practice. Provides for a safe patient care environment. Monitors environment and initiates intervention to provide safe
patient care. Must be a team player and assist with turning over rooms, ensuring that post-operative space is clean, assist with calling patients to inform of surgery times and instructions, as well as assisting in building of charts.
- Explains procedures and treatments to patient to gain cooperation, understanding and alleviate apprehension.
- Administers prescribed medications and treatments in accordance with approved nursing techniques and physician orders.
- Prepares equipment and aids physician during treatment and examination of patient.
- Maintains awareness of comfort and safety needs of patient.
- Observes patient, records significant conditions and reactions, and notifies supervisor or physician of patient's condition and reaction to drugs, treatments and significant incidents.
- Takes temperature, pulse, blood pressure and other vital signs to detect deviations from normal, assess condition of patient and responds appropriately.
- Responds to life saving situations based upon nursing standards, policies, procedures and protocol.
- Documents nursing history and physical assessment for assigned patients.
- Initiates a patient education plan according to the individualized needs of the patient, as prescribed by physician and/or hospital policy including patient and family instruction.
- Participates in department or unit quality improvement activities.
- Safeguards confidentiality of patients.
- Receives and gives report.
