The City of Tacoma Environmental Services Department is seeking highly motivated Associate Education and Outreach Liaison to support our innovative Community Ambassador Program (CAP).  ThCAP provides recycling, waste reduction, and food recovery education to diverse communities and language groups.

This is a Project Position in the Director’s Office of the Environmental Services Department. The position serves the Climate Action and Resilience special project. This project position is funded by the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Recycling Education and Outreach grant until April 20, 2027. The position reports to the Community Engagement Lead and collaborates with the CAP coordinator.  

The City is seeking an innovative CAP support person to assist the CAP coordinator in providing trainings on waste reduction, recycling, and food recovery in multiple languages to both multifamily and single-family residents. The trainings inspire ambassadors to use word-of-mouth as an effective educational tool. The program uses a train-the-trainer model in which some community members lead their own trainings of additional ambassadors.  

Under the direction of the Community Engagement Lead, the CAP Support position will be responsible for providing support to the nationally award-winning Environmental Services CAP including attending partner meetings with community-based organizations, arranging trainings, and organizing materials, and supporting ambassadors. This position will organize an annual CAP summit and manage the ambassador program newsletter.  The CAP Coordinator provides administrative support, organizes trainings and summits, supports community ambassadors, and promotes the ambassador program at events.  
  
Essential Duties
  • Plan and carry out ambassador trainings in collaboration with partners. 
  • Contact and prepare community trainers to arrange trainings and events. 
  • Develop and carry out training promotion plans with partners.  
  • Develop relationships with community ambassadors and support them in action projects.   
  • Facilitate ambassador trainings on waste reduction, recycling, and food recovery.  
  • Carry out annual ambassador summit.  
  • Make modifications to ambassador program curriculum from experience and community feedback.   
  • Manage recycling ambassador newsletter, hand-outs for trainings, and event giveaways. 
  • Gather program statistical data such as number of events, community trainers, and participants.   

Position Duties

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS*
Bachelor's degree in communications, marketing, education or directly related field

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE*
None

DESIRABLE EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

    • One (1) or more years’ experience in sustainability education and working with partner organizations.

    • One (1) or more years’ experience in community engagement.

*Equivalency: 1 year of experience = 1 year of education

LICENSES, CERTIFICATES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS

    • Valid Driver's License required at time of appointment with maintenance thereafter. 
    • Individuals may have to pass a background check depending upon assignment.

Essential Skills and Key Competencies:  

  •  Strong writing, editing, and verbal communication skills. 
  • Flexibility and persistence in working with multiple partner organizations.  
  • Proficient skills with Microsoft Office (especially PowerPoint). 
  • Interest in environmental issues and sustainability including recycling, food recovery, and waste reduction. 
  • Ability to support educational events including presentations. 
  • Principles and practices of community engagement and outreach. 
  • Enjoy event planning with diverse audiences. 
  • Ability to understand different cultural contexts and modify approach.  
  • Familiarity with curriculum development and modification. 
  • Meet schedules and timelines in creative ways.  
  • Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.

Selection Process & Supplemental Information
