SALARY
All new hires will be placed at the starting salary step of this classification ($5,637). Employees are eligible for a step increase on their anniversary date each year, up to the maximum step 5 of this salary range ($6,868).

JOB SUMMARY
This position works 8 hours per day, 12 months per year.  Under general supervision, leads and participates in operating a variety of high-speed, digital reprographic equipment in the high-volume production of a wide variety of printed material; maintains print records; provides assistance and information on efficient and productive print methods; and performs related duties as required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES
  • Leads, organizes, prioritizes, schedules, and participates in the work of the print shop.
  • Instructs and provides assistance to employees working in the print shop in the use of printing, duplicating, and related equipment.
  • Estimates cost of print jobs.
  • Orders supplies for reprographic and printing equipment and print shop operations from approved vendors.
  • Maintains records regarding materials usage and equipment utilization.
  • Initiates requests for maintenance and repair of district printing equipment.
  • Sets up and operates high-speed black and white, and color complex digital reprographic equipment. 
  • Produces a large volume and variety of materials, including booklets, letters, bulletins, flyers, envelopes, forms, programs and a variety of other documents, including materials of a highly sensitive and confidential nature.
  • Produces large format color banners and posters.
  • Sets up equipment for extended production runs and monitors the equipment during the printing process.
  • Reviews originals for quality and efficient reproduction methods, and proofs layout prior to mass printing. 
  • Cleans and performs routine maintenance on printing equipment.
  • Collates, assembles, trims, binds, and staples materials as needed.
  • Orders, receives, stores, and distributes supplies and forms.
  • Stays current on industry trends and makes recommendations to the supervisor of the print shop regarding new technology, equipment, or processes related to printing operations, as appropriate.
  • Communicates with school and district personnel regarding printing needs.
  • Receives and processes work orders as they come in.  
  • Logs, maintains, and exports daily print orders into a record system for billing.

Position Duties

Employment Standards

Education and Experience: Graduation from high school or equivalent, and three years of experience in the operation of high-speed printers and related equipment. One year of experience working with Canon Océ high-speed printers and related software is desirable. One year of experience with large format printing is desirable. Lead or supervisory experience is desirable.
Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of:
  • Methods, equipment, and materials used in large quantity printing work.
  • Operation and maintenance of high-speed printers and related reprographic equipment.
  • Large format color printing for posters and banners and related software.
  • Record-keeping techniques.
  • Basic inventory methods and practices.
  • Basic computer applications.
  • Safety hazards common to a print shop and safe working techniques.
Ability to:
  • Plan, organize, and lead the work of others.
  • Operate and maintain digital high-speed printers and related reprographic equipment, including a powered programmable paper cutter.
  • Make minor mechanical adjustments to equipment.
  • Optimize print equipment for maximum output.
  • Review print jobs for accuracy.
  • Understand and follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Perform simple arithmetic calculations.
  • Exert moderate physical effort, such as in standing, and lifting or moving supplies and materials.
  • Maintain a variety of files; develop and keep accurate records and reports.
  • Prioritize and schedule work effectively to meet critical deadlines. 
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with administrators, other district personnel, and vendors.
Physical Demands/Working Conditions
Work in a high-volume, fast paced print shop environment with regular exposure to noisy equipment; frequent standing and walking with some bending, twisting, stooping, squatting, reaching, and crouching to run jobs and reach materials.  Exposure to odors from chemicals used in the printing process; occasional exposure to fumes when operating and cleaning equipment.  Frequent pushing, pulling, and lifting up to 50 pounds without assistance, as well as use of a step-stool, ladder and a dolly. Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard and a variety of specialized equipment. Hearing and speaking to exchange information in person and on the telephone; and seeing to read a variety of materials, proofread work, and monitor printing operations.

Minimum Qualifications

Applications will be accepted from the general public and district employees who possess the above qualifications. The district reserves the right to invite applicants whose qualifications most closely meet the requirements needed for the position to continue in the examination process. The examination may consist of an evaluation of training and experience, multiple choice, performance, and oral/technical exams. Persons needing reasonable accommodation must notify the Office of Personnel Services by the last day to file. A qualifying score must be achieved on all portions of the examination in order to be placed on the open eligibility list. Outside and district candidates will be placed on one ranked list, with eligible permanent district employees receiving five seniority points which will be added to their final scores.

VETERAN'S CREDIT: Veterans shall have an additional five (5) points added to their final percentage score on an open eligibility list as prescribed by Education Code, Section 45296. "Veteran" as used in this article means any person who has served in the United States armed forces in time of war, or national emergency declared by the President of the United States of America, and who has been discharged or released under conditions other than dishonorable. "Armed forces" means the United States Air Force, Army, Navy, Marine Corps, or Coast Guard. At least thirty (30) days of active service are required to obtain veteran preference points.

Disabled veterans shall have an additional ten (10) points added to their final percentage score on an open eligibility list as prescribed by Education Code, Section 45296. A "disabled veteran" as used in this article means any veteran who is currently declared by the United States Veterans Administration to be ten percent (10%) or more disabled as a result of service in the Armed Forces of the United States. Proof of disability shall be deemed conclusive if it is of record in the United States Veterans Administration.

Additional eligibility may be granted based on future changes to the law and verification from the Veteran's Administration or the United States Office of Personnel Management.

In order to obtain credit, the applicant shall furnish satisfactory proof of qualifying military service prior to establishment of the eligibility list. No adjustment of rank on the list shall be made when such proof is presented thereafter.

A veteran may be credited veterans' preference points only to obtain initial employment in the district. Thereafter, the only additional points for an open examination shall be seniority points granted in accord with section 4220.3(C)2.

HIRING PROCEDURES: Garden Grove is a merit system (civil service) school district. Employment and promotions are based upon merit, fitness and qualifications. The person selected to fill any regular position will be from among the top three ranks on the eligibility list approved by the Personnel Commission. All regular employees will serve a six (6) month probation.

EXAMINATION FOR TUBERCULOSISProof of freedom from active tuberculosis must be furnished prior to employment and must be based upon an intradermal Mantoux tuberculin skin test completed within the last 60 days.

FINGERPRINTING: All new employees will be fingerprinted.
