Mechanics perform repair and maintenance work as well as upfitting and retrofitting on the City's fleet of vehicles. Our fleet includes police vehicles, passenger cars, light duty trucks, heavy duty trucks and equipment, motorized small equipment and tools to minimize down time due to malfunctions or failure. Work includes diagnosing, repairing or overhauling of engines, transmission, brakes, heating and cooling systems in addition to preventive maintenance which involves repairing and replacement of parts or replenishing of fluids. Work is performed independently at the journey level, requiring substantial knowledge and technical skills of vehicle and equipment maintenance and repair techniques, as well as understanding of established industrial standards, procedures and practices. Fleet operations leads define objectives, goals and deadlines.
Schedule Details: This role will work a 4x10 schedule; 6am-4:30pm from Monday-ThursdayPosition Duties
- Perform emergency and preventive maintenance diagnosis and repair for all gas, electric and diesel operated vehicles and equipment, including but not limited to police, K-9, light trucks, passenger vehicles, backhoes, sewer combination trucks, jetter trucks, loaders, street sweepers, chippers, trailers, asphalt grinders, boom trucks, forklifts and more.
- Perform scheduled maintenance; oil and air filter change, adjust brakes, lubricate parts and tune up systems
- Diagnose and troubleshoot engine, driveshaft, transmission/transaxle, suspension, differential, brake, ignition, hydraulic, mechanical, electrical, electronics, cooling and combustion systems, either through manual testing or using computerized scanning machine
- Align, adjust, repair, replace or overhaul engine, transmission, suspension, brake and defective part as required based on diagnosis
- Upfitting and retrofitting of vehicles including installation, welding and fabrication of lighting, racking, winches, wiring, and more.
- Design, machine, weld, cut and fabricate small parts either to modify equipment or repair worn out/broken parts
- Repair, balance, replace and align tires/wheels
- Service and repair heating and air conditioning systems
- Install and repair electronic and electrical components on vehicles such as lights, wiring and fuses
- Assist with specification for new vehicle purchases
- Keep proper record of maintenance repair history and parts used on the vehicles
- Clean and maintain shop
- Mentor peers and new hires
- Diagnose and program units using computer diagnostic programs
- Safely inspect and maintain electric vehicles
Knowledge of and Skills in
- Knowledge of repairing and maintaining gasoline, electric and diesel operated engines, machinery and equipment.
- Knowledge of diagnosing and repairing mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, electronics, cooling and combustion systems of automotive vehicle and machinery.
- Knowledge, practices and methods, either by manual testing or computer scanning machine, used in troubleshooting and repairing of light and heavy-duty vehicles and equipment
- Proficient in welding and fabrication of automotive vehicle parts and pieces
- Exhaust emission regulation
- Heating and air-conditioning servicing
- Welding, machining and cutting techniques
- Electrical wiring techniques and procedures
- Industrial and shop safety rules and procedures
- Materials and tools used in repairing, maintaining and upfitting of vehicles and equipment

Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience
- High school diploma or equivalency
- Specialized training in automotive and/or heavy equipment systems repair and
- 3 years experience in vehicle maintenance and repair preferred
Licenses and Certificates
- Valid Washington States Driver's license required
- Valid Commercial Driver's license
- ASE Master Automotive Technician and/or Master Medium/Heavy Truck Technician Certification desirable
