As a key member of the Finance team, the Accounting Supervisor ensures the accuracy and integrity of the company’s financial records while safeguarding company assets. This role is responsible for overseeing daily accounting operations, maintaining the general ledger, and delivering accurate, timely financial reporting. The Accounting Supervisor will analyze financial data across assigned business areas, manage accounting processes and systems, and support ongoing projects. Success in this role requires strong leadership, meticulous attention to detail, and a deep understanding of full-cycle accounting principles and practices. Position responsibilities:
- This position will provide guidance and mentorship to other team members. Acts in the absence of the Accounting Manager to provide interim direction and support. May have formal supervisory responsibilities if assigned.
- Works in all aspects of general ledger maintenance, ensuring accuracy and timely completion of monthly, quarterly, and year-end closing processes.
- Prepares and reviews journal entries and fully reconciles all assigned accounts to the supporting documents and ERP system. Conducts analysis and research to identify issues, implements necessary adjustments and corrections, and flags areas requiring leadership attention and process improvement.
- Works closely with management across the group to align financial objectives with organizational goals.
- Participates in hiring process for Accountant positions. Trains new Accountants and provides ongoing support, mentorship, and subject matter expertise to Accounting team members.
- If assigned direct reports, provides leadership through hiring recommendations, performance management, feedback, and direction, including support and corrective action as needed.
- Establishes and maintains internal controls that are in alignment with GAAP. Researches accounting issues for compliance with GAAP.
- For assigned group/s: compiles, closes, analyzes, and reviews Profit & Loss Statement in totality, providing to Finance management for final review. May include compilation of all Accountant close pieces and initial review for all groups.
- Works in partnership with the Accounting Manager assisting with projects and consolidation of all internal and external financial data necessary for accurate accounting on consolidated business results. Interacts closely with the Accounting Manager on numerous aspects of general ledger and financial statement reporting.
- Prepares financial reports by period close dates, which includes multi-level Profit & Loss Statement, reconciled balance sheet, statement of cash flow, bank reporting, end-of-year audit requirements and other measurements or ad-hoc reports.
- Participates in and may lead budgeting process and provides support and analysis as needed including updating and communicating established timelines. Provides forecasting and monitors annual budgets and analyzes spending trends in Company’s financials relaying observations and issues to appropriate Departmental/GL Owners.
- Assists with, and often leads, required audit functions such as sales tax, federal, year-end financial audits and tax preparation.
- Ensures compliance with local, state, and federal government requirements.
- Administers, updates, and/or maintains various accounting and financial software, online banking portal, business intelligence tools, and ERP system for smooth GL interface and department operations.
- Leads, assists, and/or manages finance and / or cross functional projects.
- Performs all other duties as assigned.
Position requirements:
- A bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field required; master’s degree in accounting or finance preferred.
- At least eight years of progressive experience in accounting roles with a focus on financial reporting and analysis and at least three years working in or managing full cycle accounting; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Experience supervising or supporting other Accountants preferred.
- Strong understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles.
- Ability to create financial reports from given information.
- Must be proficient in Microsoft Excel and the use of accounting software. Strong skills manipulating and organizing large sets of data.
- Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference with ability to apply mathematical concepts to practical situations.
- Thorough knowledge of U.S. GAAP with a sound working knowledge of accounting principles, standards, and regulations.
- Experience providing full cycle accounting required; working full cycle accounting for a business of $50 million or more in revenue preferred.
- Knowledge of internal control systems.
- Ability to attend to detail at a high level of accuracy.
- Ability to collect data, evaluate results, and draw conclusions.
- Ability to work with a high level of confidentiality and with sensitive and proprietary information.
- Must be well organized and equipped to work in a fast-paced environment with the ability to multi-task, prioritize and meet deadlines while maintaining accuracy.
- Strong problem-solving skills: listening to, interpreting, and meeting the needs of others; diagnosing and rectifying problems.
- Project management skills: establishing objectives, timelines, and deadlines; action planning to meet deadlines; evaluating current and future positions.
- Ability to communicate information across a variety of individuals, departments, and external parties.
- Ability to effectively present information both orally and in writing.
- While multilingual skills are valued, English proficiency (written and spoken) is a core requirement for this position due to the nature of the work, safety regulations, and to ensure accurate communication and comprehension.
- Lead – Responsible for own work and providing guidance/motivation to team; no personnel authority; different from a Senior IC, a lead is a knowledge resource for their peers.
- If assigned direct reports, Supervisor – Focus on getting work done through others; oversee day-to-day operations of a group.
