QUALIFICATIONS:
Required: Current, unencumbered Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of Oregon. Minimum 1 year of dialysis nursing experience (acute or chronic) or critical care experience with CRRT/SLED. Strong assessment, problem-solving, and independent decision-making skills. Ability to work effectively in high-acuity and fast-paced hospital settings. Comfort assigning and supervising Dialysis Patient Care Technicians.
Preferred: Previous acute inpatient dialysis experience. National certification in nephrology nursing (e.g., CNN, CDN). Knowledge of regulatory standards related to dialysis care.
TYPICAL PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS:
Requires frequent standing, walking, bending, and lifting up to 50 pounds. The position involves repetitive hand and arm movements when setting up and monitoring dialysis equipment. Exposure to blood, body fluids, and infectious materials is routine. Sustained attention to detail, strong problemsolving skills, and the ability to respond quickly and appropriately in urgent or emergency situations. Must manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment, adapt to rapidly changing patient conditions, and maintain emotional resilience when working with patients experiencing chronic illness or distress. Compassion, clear communication, and teamwork are essential. Variable schedule including early mornings, evenings, weekends, holidays, and on-call shifts.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Clinical & Patient Care
- Provide comprehensive patient care by assessing, planning, initiating, monitoring, and discontinuing hemodialysis, SLED, and CRRT treatments in accordance with physician orders and hospital policies.
- Administer medications and manage patient stability, including anticoagulants and fluid balance, while monitoring patient response and intervening in emergencies.
- Perform and oversee vascular access care (AV fistulas, grafts, central venous catheters) including assessment, cannulation, catheter connection/disconnection, and monitoring for complications.
Technical Duties
- Assign and supervise technical and clinical tasks to Dialysis Patient Care Technicians (PCTs), ensuring safe and effective care delivery.
- Operate, monitor, and troubleshoot dialysis machines and water treatment systems, ensuring compliance with safety and regulatory standards.
Documentation & Compliance
- Document all aspects of care including assessments, treatments, and outcomes accurately in the medical record while ensuring regulatory compliance.
Teamwork & Professionalism
- Collaborate with physicians and the interdisciplinary team to coordinate and optimize patient care, while serving as a resource and professional role model.
- Participate in ongoing quality assurance, performance improvement, and infection prevention initiatives.
- Participate in staff meetings, training sessions, and continuing education as required.
