Cary is seeking a skilled automotive mechanic to work in a fast-paced, dynamic operation where technicians conduct preventive maintenance and corrective repairs for Cary's fleet of various automotive, construction and specialized equipment. As part of the Fleet Maintenance Division, the Fleet Maintenance Technician II will have a unique opportunity to proudly work on skilled team and support Cary’s commitment to providing excellent service.

Fleet positions are "critical positions", meaning employees are required to report to work during adverse weather or other emergency situations, to maintain equipment and/or assist the Fleet Division in any capacity necessary to continue Town operations.

The anticipate hiring range for this position is $54,163.20 - $66,539.20. Hiring rate will be commensurate with experience.

Position Duties

Diagnoses, adjusts, repairs and services a variety of heavy and light duty vehicles and equipment. For example; cars, construction equipment, specialized municipal equipment, sanitation trucks, and emergency response vehicles.
 
 Determines need for repair or replacement of components. 
 
 Diagnoses, repairs and overhauls brakes, ignition and fuel systems, transmissions, hydraulic systems, differentials, front, and rear axle assemblies;   
 
Troubleshoots complex electrical systems on automotive equipment and heavy equipment control systems including multiplexing, Dual-CAN and OBDII systems and components.
 
Uses OEM software for diagnostics of light, medium, and heavy-duty equipment; uploads appropriate software and uses system information to assist in the troubleshooting of repairs needed and procedures.
 
Performs major and minor motor repair and replacement work.
 
 Performs field servicing of vehicles and equipment to repair operational failure;
 
 Makes emission system repairs;
 
 Repairs air conditioning systems;
 
 Performs state vehicle inspections;
 
 Welds, cuts and fabricates parts and materials to make necessary repairs to vehicles and equipment;
 
 Completes necessary forms and records
 
 Participates in cleaning of shop area. 
 
Assists other technicians in shop with any maintenance or repairs as needed;  
 
 Performs other job-related tasks as required.
 
 

Minimum Qualifications

Thorough knowledge of the methods, tools and equipment used in the repair of light automotive passenger cars, trucks, construction and maintenance equipment; thorough knowledge and skill in the use of shop tools--such as scopes, electronic data readers, volt ohm meter, drills, presses, lathes, grinders, micrometers, brake relining and drum grinding machines; skill in the use and the operations of tools and machinery used in equipment repair work; ability to diagnose problems; ability to use computer equipment to access databases; ability to detect by inspection any worn or broken automotive part; ability to keep records of repairs and service operations and to make reports; ability to interpret and work from sketches, diagrams and installation and repair charts; ability to follow oral and written instructions accurately.

An employee may not have a significant impairment of any of the major life functions in that work requires considerable physical strength in lifting heavy objects. This includes the physical ability to walk, stand for long periods, reach, stoop, climb, etc. Visual acuity is also necessary to read and write handwritten and typewritten information and to make necessary repairs. The employee must also be able to hear.

Other Qualifications

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and 3 to 5 years experience in professionally repairing automotive, construction and specialized equipment.

A valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
   
Special Requirements 

Requires possession of a valid class "B" commercial driver's license (or the ability to obtain within 6 months of hire) with an acceptable driving record
 
Required National Incident Management System (NIMS) training will be provided upon employment.
   
Ability to obtain Safety and Emissions Certified Inspector certificate within three months and Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification within 1 year of employment. 
Air conditioning EPA 609, and OBD II certifications are preferred.
 
Conditions of Employment 
Requires drug testing and background check (which may include criminal history check, motor vehicle records check, education verification and credit history review) and satisfactory reference checks prior to employment.
