Overview: Working with the Consumer Lending Manager, this position is responsible for the daily oversight and management of the underwriting, processing and funding in the Consumer Lending Department. Key objectives of the position include successful management of the daily activities of the Consumer Lending Department to deliver expected results as outlined by MCU’s strategic plans and direction; adhere to and implement a prudent lending philosophy that supports the profitable growth of the consumer loan portfolio; foster and promote a positive, collaborative culture across the team and all other departments and teams throughout the credit union. Participate in planning sessions to determine future lending objectives and products.
Responsibilities:
Specific duties include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Oversee daily operations of the credit union's consumer lending team consistent with strategic initiatives, governing consumer credit laws, rules and regulations, as well as internal policies and procedures.
- Work with the staff to ensure applications are reviewed, processed & funded within established service levels and meet or exceed department goals.
- Assist with the monitoring and troubleshooting of loan and system errors.
- Assist with monthly call monitoring, providing coaching and feedback to ensure staff meets or exceeds department goals
- Coach and mentor staff by providing ongoing professional development which meets credit union, service and individual development needs.
- Meets with individual direct reports at least monthly and conduct team meetings monthly.
- Identify, assess, and prioritize initiatives that solve member and employee pain points.
- Oversee and implement the performance management process for the team; develop key performance measures that support the strategic plan of the credit union, set high performance expectations, monitor and coach accountability across the team in service levels and production objectives.
- Establish and monitor goals for direct reports that are measurable to contribute to the overall production and efficiency of the department.
- Monitor and review underwriting decisions, processing and funding errors, trends and exceptions. Make recommendations to Manager of Consumer Lending for revisions to guidelines, policies and/or procedures to ensure a positive Member experience.
- Regularly review declined applications to ensure consistency. Overturned decisions will be monitored and utilized for ongoing coaching of staff to continuously challenge their decision making and underwriting skills.
- Monitor consumer lending loan officer’s policy and exception requests and make recommendations to Manager of Consumer Lending
- Participate in Credit Union sprints, projects and strategic initiatives when they opportunity arises.
- Complete timely reviews of application decisions and funding, reviewing for adherence to Consumer Loan Policy/Guidelines and provide coaching and feedback as necessary.
- Underwrite, process and fund more complex loans as needed or within higher level authority and make recommendations to senior level management as necessary. May back up any staff queues as necessary to ensure SLA’s are met consistently.
- Ensure open lines of communication and training for consumer lending teams as well as those taking applications. Train staff on changes to guidelines, how to better prepare applications, etc. to ensure a tighter turn time on decisions.
- Compile and analyze data to evaluate the present and future status of consumer loan production, products, policies and procedures.
- Communicate and facilitate change to achieve strategic initiatives and consumer lending goals. Create a clear plan of action to achieve stated goals in all areas.
- Work with the Quality Assurance team as needed to complete timely review of internal audit findings, reviewing for adherence to Consumer Loan Policy/Guidelines and provide coaching and feedback as necessary.
- Generate production reports.
- Promote and cross-sell credit union services/products that are beneficial to the member. Ensure staff is proactively looking to assist frontline employees and members with additional products that benefit their financial needs.
- Work with Branch management to assist in training branch staff who offer and deliver consumer lending products to members.
- Ensure all member complaints, appeal requests or letters are answered timely and in accordance with MCU policies and procedures; document findings and report as necessary to appropriate departments (i.e. Member Experience for tracking).
- All other duties and projects as assigned.
Requirements:
- College degree required or equivalent working experience.
- Minimum 3+ years in lending; preferably in a leadership role.
- Minimum 3 years of underwriting authority.
- Experience in credit verification and lending determination procedures.
- Familiarity with various credit reports and rating mechanisms.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Able to work independently in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment.
- Familiar with state and federal regulations concerning lending.
- Excellent credit analysis ability.
- Experience in Microsoft Office and related loan software (Meridian Link LoansPQ and Jack Henry Symitar.)
- Ability to work evenings and weekends as needed.
- Highly ethical.
