About the Department

Under general supervision, transports Elder Community members to and from appointments and related destinations.  Driver work shifts vary depending on transportation needs of the Elders and may include some evenings, early mornings and weekend shifts. 

Position Duties

Experience equivalent to one-year of non-emergency driving or closely related work.  Must currently possess and maintain a valid Arizona Driver’s License and be able to meet the Community’s insurance carrier. Must be able to obtain First Aid/CPR certification and a Food Handler’s Card within 60 days of hire.   Must be able to successfully complete and pass a background check.  Ideal candidate will be able to speak the O’odham language fluently.
 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Transports dialysis patients to their treatments daily.
  • Maintains contact with the Dialysis Treatment Center for updated information regarding elders put on and take off times for efficient pick up and home delivery times.
  • Ensure good customer relations by consistently delivering elders on time and behaving with integrity in a courteous and professional manner at all times. 
  • Drives vehicle to (van/car) to pick up and deliver elderly and disabled passengers in a safe and timely manner to specified destinations within the local area, as well as the Phoenix metropolitan area.
  • Assists elderly, infirmed, and special needs passengers into and out of vehicle with wheel chair lift if needed; ensuring proper safety methods and restraints are used throughout transportation.
  • Delivers meals to homebound Elders and occasionally miscellaneous items to Elders’ homes.
  • May take note of and possibly resolve elder complaints. Reports more complex issues and complaints to the Program Director for resolution. 
  • Observes and reports any pertinent abnormalities such as bruises, bumps etc. of the elder being transported
  • Provides basic emergency medical care (CPR) as needed.
  • Be punctual, reliable and honest
  • Prepares and turns in mileage logs, maintenance reports, and other vehicle records as required
  • Schedules and performs routine vehicle maintenance such as, checking oil, and gas weekly
  • Proper personal hygiene and good grooming are essential for this job.
  • Maintains cleanliness of both the interior and exterior of the vehicle
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
 

Other Qualifications

  • Knowledge of State and tribal traffic laws.
  • Knowledge of State driving rules and regulations.
  • Knowledge of the freeways and roads systems in the Phoenix metropolitan and surrounding areas.
  • Knowledge of basic emergency medical care practices and techniques.
  • Skill in operating assigned vehicles safely.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with Community members, other staff, and the public.
  • Ability to drive in heavy traffic when necessary

  • 1-2 years of customer service experience
  • Prior driving and delivery experience desired
  • Must have a current driver’s license in good standing
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to drive in heavy traffic when necessary.
  • Ability to lift, push, and pull those Elderly patients that are wheelchair bound.
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality of patients and program information
  • Ability to speak in the O’odham language is preferred.
