Job Description:

In addition to functioning as a staff nurse, provides support to the Operations Manager/Assistant Operations Manager and serves as the expert resource for clinical staff related to patient care/ processes. In absence of the Operations Manager/Assistant Operations Manager, this position has some oversight of clinical operations during normal business hours.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Assists manager with assessing staffing needs. 
  • Identifies potential staffing concerns and brings them to the attention of the manager.   
  • In collaboration with the manager, assures that day’s smooth operation of the clinic and infusion suite, facilitating the creation and maintenance of a safe, comfortable, and therapeutic environment for patients, visitors, and staff.
  • Ensures drug inventory is maintained at appropriate levels.
  • Meets with the manager as needed to discuss clinical issues.
  • Assists the manager/assistant manager with audits/reports as needed.
  • Performs clinical duties which includes but is not limited to:
  • Performs all responsibilities as outlined in the Staff RN job description plus.
  • Refers patients to appropriate support services.
  • Assists physicians with procedures.
  • Assists lab staff when necessary.
  • Assists other clinical staff as necessary.
  • Provides support to Chemotherapy Prep Tech when necessary.
  • Functions as a clinical preceptor to newly hired staff when other preceptors are not available.
  • Assists with education & training of existing clinical staff on new or revised processes & standards.
  • Reviews patients’ EMR documentation intermittently to ensure all required data has been entered accurately before, during or after patients’ appointments.
  • Completes review/follow up on assigned clinical activity and other reports.
  • Assists with making staff assignments and data entry into daily huddle dashboard as needed.
  • Acts as a mentor/role model for all clinical staff.
  • Makes self readily available to nursing staff to discuss any issues or concerns.
  • Assists with investigating and resolving patient/visitors concerns/complaints.
  • Adheres to practice guidelines and Policy and Procedures.
  • Participates on committees when requested of him/her.
  • Assumes responsibility for personal and professional growth.
  • Consistently maintains a positive, professional, and approachable attitude when interacting with others.
  • Encourages and supports a healthy work environment using appropriate problem solving/ conflict resolution techniques/interventions to ensure a calm, efficient and effective workplace for all.
  • Other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of nursing principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of oncology practices and treatments.
  • Knowledge of state-of-the-art developments in cancer diagnosis and therapy.
  • Skill in providing expertise about oncology to colleagues, allied health personnel and health care consumers.
  • Skill in administering chemotherapy and other treatment therapies.
  • Ability to empathize with patients and families and to deal with grief and difficult patient interactions.
  • Ability to collaborate with health care team to make individualized treatment plan for each cancer patient.
  • Ability to cope with death and dying.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with others verbally and in writing.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

  • A Registered Nurse (RN) with at least 2 years oncology experience or at least one year’s experience as an RN at Tennessee Oncology.
  • ONS Chemotherapy – Immunotherapy certification required at the time of or within 3 months of hire.
  • Certification in Oncology Nursing (OCN) or other relevant ONCC certification required at the time of hire or within 12 months of hire.  Certification may be waived for RNs with >5 years recent oncology experience. If certification waived, five continuing education credits on oncology specific topics required annually, Random audits will be performed.
  • AHA or ARC BLS certification required at the time of hire or within 3 months of hire.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills are essential.
