We are looking for an assistant editor to work in a full-time staff position. You'll be responsible for helping shape the Guardian US’s coverage of soccer in the United States and abroad, and jumping in to edit our coverage of other sports on occasion. This hire is part of a significant expansion of the Guardian’s coverage of soccer in and for the US. You will work with new staff writers in soccer and freelancers across all sports, and newsrooms in the US and UK, collaborating with audience, video, visual and data teams. The ideal candidate will be hungry to produce great journalism in multiple formats, and have plenty of experience doing so.

Salary range: $93,000 - $100,000

 

About the role

  • Work closely with the senior US soccer editor, the US sports editor, and UK editors on soccer and other sports to ensure editorial approaches are aligned and complimentary where necessary
  • Keep tabs on the news emerging around soccer in the United States, commission articles off those stories, and when needed be prepared to write up a piece yourself.
  • Keep track of news and trends from other US sports (American football, basketball, baseball, hockey, etc) 
  • Stay up-to-date on soccer from around the world, in search of storylines that appeal to the large, diverse, and growing audience for the sport in the United States 
  • Build relationships with writers to help them do their best work
  • Ensure all content meets the Guardian's standards of accuracy, fairness, and editorial independence
  • Utilize a digital-first approach to coverage, constantly seeking out multimedia additions to enhance our stories and commissioning in different formats 

About you

  • Excellent knowledge and understanding of soccer in the Americas and globally.
  • Knowledge and understanding of a variety of other sports, such as American football, basketball, baseball, tennis, etc 
  • Excellent news judgment and high standards for fair and accurate reporting
  • Ability to form productive, trustful relationships with writers, delivering feedback that is actionable and smart edits that elevate the final product 
  • Experience producing or commissioning multimedia content (video, audio, infographics, etc) is a plus
  • Strong track record of editing sports coverage for a large-scale American and/or global audience
  • Treat all kinds of soccer (men’s, women’s, domestic, European, etc)  with equal respect, committing to the same level of journalistic standards and seriousness regardless of who is playing
  • Familiarity with Guardian sport content, both in the US and globally
