The Resource Sharing & Research Library Associate position has two immediate supervisors: the Access Services Manager for resource sharing, user services, and student hiring and supervision (85% of responsibilities), and the Dean of Kent Library for library research activities (15% of responsibilities). This position works under minimal supervision.
Access Services is Kent Library’s primary user service point. The Resource Sharing & Research Library Associate provides leadership in establishing and ensuring excellent student, faculty, staff and community guest user resource sharing services. The Library Associate is responsible for resource sharing policies, procedures and management. These responsibilities include document delivery and borrowing and lending activities with state, regional, national and international libraries and specific services such as, Interlibrary Loan, MOBIUS, or other consortia. This work involves in-depth knowledge of circulation and interlibrary loan policies and procedures, document delivery services and copyright and fair use as it applies to libraries. The Library Associate has responsibility for training and guiding others who participate in providing resource sharing services.
In addition to resource sharing, the Library Associate is tasked with hiring, on boarding, training, scheduling, supervising, approving time, and evaluating student employees in the Access Services unit. Access Services employs 15-20 student employees each semester, and the Library Associate is responsible for coordinating daytime tasks for student employees at both service desks in conjunction with the Access Services Manager, or other supervisors.
The Resource Sharing & Research Library Associate is charged with the collection and analysis of statistics and data to support library strategic, academic, and management decisions and actions. The Library Associate generates, collates, analyzes, evaluates and assesses library data in collaboration with other library units. This position prepares quarterly, annual and ‘as requested’ library reports, sharing information with the Dean, unit leaders and interested library staff and is responsible for updating the Kent Library ‘quick facts’ statistical information accessible through the library website. The Library Associate shares relevant library information and statistics with the Dean, library faculty and academic department chairs and faculty in support of program and/or university accreditation reports. The Library Associate works closely with the Southeast Missouri State University Office of Institutional Research and Academic Assessment which coordinates external reporting of institutional data to government and other agencies.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Providing excellent, courteous, friendly user services;
- Using advanced resource sharing techniques to facilitate user access to, and help with, library resource sharing services;
- Providing leadership and expertise in resolving resource sharing or service problems and difficult service interactions;
- Creating and/or maintaining, implementing and documenting Kent Library’s resource sharing policies and procedures;
- Serving as the functional expert in the operations of the library management system specific to resource sharing functions;
- Hiring, on boarding, training, scheduling, supervising, approving time, and evaluating student employees;
- Providing user assistance at the both service desks as needed;
- Participating in opening and closing the library building and ensuring safe and secure spaces for users, staff and library collections as assigned;
- Developing and maintaining effective communication within Access Services and with other library units;
- Developing and producing quarterly, annual and other statistical and analytical reports and/or narrative summaries for all areas of Kent Library;
- Designing, developing and maintaining an archive of library statistical information and reports;
- Communicating information to the Provost’s Office, the University Office of Institutional Research and other University departments and units;
- Serving on library and university committees; and
- Participating in training and other professional development opportunities that will enhance job skills and expertise.
Position Duties
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university; a Master’s degree a plus
- Minimum of two years work experience in a library
- Minimum of one year of resource sharing experience in an academic library
- Strong user service orientation
- Experience with a library management system
- Experience training and supervising other employees
- Experience using computers and computer software, especially spreadsheets, effectively in a work setting
- Ability to learn to use multiple software programs or packages for collecting, managing and manipulating data
- Excellent attention to detail and ability to maintain a high level of accuracy in work
- Ability to organize work effectively and strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Demonstrated initiative, flexibility and ability to work well as a member of a group and individually
- Evidence of effective communication skills
- Demonstrated commitment to collegiality when interacting with others
Special Conditions:
The primary work schedule for this position is 8:00am to 5:00pm, Monday through Friday. During summer, intersessions and from time-to-time, this work schedule may be modified to meet the needs of the library.
