THE POSITION
The Planning division is seeking a motivated and inquisitive Intern II to support a wide range of planning and community enhancement initiatives. This internship offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in municipal operations while contributing to meaningful projects that improve neighborhood conditions and support community development programs. Under the guidance of experienced staff, the Intern II will assist with program development and implementation, research and analyze financial and operational data, prepare reports and presentations, support budget and grant tracking, and engage in public education efforts. This role is designed to foster professional growth through exposure to planning, community engagement activities, and offering a pragmatic understanding of local government and its impact on the community.

IDEAL CANDIDATE
The ideal Intern II candidate is a proactive and detail-oriented individual with a strong interest in public service, urban planning, or local government operations. They bring curiosity, analytical thinking, and excellent communication skills to the role and are eager to learn from experienced professionals. The candidate should be comfortable working with data, preparing reports, assisting with budget and grant tracking, and supporting community outreach efforts. They thrive in collaborative environments and are capable of managing multiple tasks with accuracy and professionalism. Proficiency in business software, a willingness to take initiative, and a commitment to public service are key traits. This internship is designed to provide both formal and informal mentoring, helping the candidate build a strong foundation for a future career in government or community development.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
A typical way of obtaining the knowledge, skills and abilities outlined above is graduation from graduation from high school or G.E.D. equivalent; and be currently enrolled in a college Master's Degree level program.
 


ABOUT THE PLANNING DIVISION
The Planning Division recommends and implements land use policies, processes land use applications, and prepares and processes updates and revisions to the General Plan, Municipal Code, Landscape guidelines, and Design guidelines. This division provides staff support to the City Council, the Planning Commission, the Environmental and Historical Preservation Board, and the Development Review Team.

ABOUT THE COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT DEPARTMENT
The Community Development Department (CDD) provides a variety of development, business, and property owner services. CDD administers development review and project entitlement activities, performs long-range planning, and maintains the City’s General Plan. The department also performs building plan review, issues various permits, and performs inspections for new and altered projects. CDD manages a comprehensive community enhancement program that includes nuisance abatement and parking control among a host of other services. The department oversees the full-service operations for Animal Services, including animal care, adoption, and public safety.
