Exceptional Children Teacher
Nature of Work
Under general supervision, the Exceptional Children (EC) Teacher provides specialized instruction and support to students identified as having disabilities, in accordance with state and federal regulations. The teacher develops and implements Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) in classroom settings appropriate to each student’s age and developmental level. Responsibilities include designing and adapting instructional materials, developing lesson plans, and creating learning experiences that promote academic, behavioral, and social growth. The EC Teacher monitors progress, maintains accurate documentation, and ensures all practices comply with state and federal guidelines.
Duties and Responsibilities

Develops and implements instructional plans aligned with district curriculum goals and students’ Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).

Creates, updates, and maintains IEPs using diagnostic information and assessment data.

Provides direct special education instruction to identified students.

Utilizes a variety of instructional strategies and adapts materials to meet individual learning needs.

Monitors and manages student behavior, maintaining classroom discipline and implementing de-escalation and behavioral support strategies as needed.

When necessary, uses approved restraint procedures, documenting and reporting all instances according to policy.

Assists students with personal care and self-help needs (e.g., eating, toileting, mobility) as appropriate.

Communicates regularly with parents and guardians regarding student progress and performance.

Serves as case manager for assigned students, collaborating with parents, school staff, and outside agencies to address student needs.

Maintains accurate records in compliance with the North Carolina Procedures Governing Programs and Services for Children with Disabilities and applicable federal laws.

Treats all students equitably and interacts effectively with students, colleagues, parents, and community members.

Engages in ongoing professional development and demonstrates continual growth.

Completes Random Moment in Time (RMT) studies as required by MAC program guidelines.

Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Training and Experience
-
Bachelor’s degree in Special Education or related field.

Must hold or be eligible for a North Carolina teaching license in at least one area of disability.
