OVERVIEW:

We manage an integrated water resources system that includes the supply of clean, safe water, flood protection, and stewardship of streams on behalf of Santa Clara County's 2 million residents.

The Skilled Trades Internship Program has an internship opportunity at our Coyote Pumping Plant in South County (Morgan Hill, CA).
NOTE: The Coyote Pumping Plant is part of the Central Valley Project (CVP) that supplies water to the Santa Clara Valley Water District. The plant receives water from the San Luis Reservoir and has six pumps located in the Pump Building that deliver raw water to treatment plants and groundwater recharge ponds throughout Santa Clara County.
INTERNSHIP LOCATION STATUS:
This internship position will require the selected candidate to report on-site 100% of the time, adhering to strict safety protocols. This internship will be located at the Coyote Pumping Plant at 18300 Peet Rd, Morgan Hill, CA 95037
Position Duties
WE LOOK FOR INTERNS WHO ARE:
- Currently enrolled in, or recently completed (within the last six months), an Engineering, Science, or Water-Related program
- Working toward State certification in water distribution systems
- Community service–minded and safety-oriented
- Curious, hands-on, and mechanically inclined
- Available for shift work
- Skilled in operating a variety of hand tools
- (Optional) Experienced with welding and/or telemetry devices
- (Preferred) Pursuing a T1/D1 license
AS AN INTERN, A TYPICAL DAY INCLUDES:
- Early start (6:00 a.m.)
- Learning Best Management Practices (BMPs):
- Double containment procedures
- Storm drain protection
- Plant housekeeping (dumpsters, storage areas, sediment control, material stockpiles, etc.)
- Developing safe work practices:
- Lockout/tagout (“LOTO”)
- Proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE)
- Training with Certified Distribution System Operatorsin:
- Inspections, cleaning, and servicing
- Performing repairs on equipment and systems
- Building soft skillsby learning to:
- Communicate and collaborate effectively in a team environment
- Adapt to new situations and apply problem-solving skills
- Performing preventive and corrective maintenance (PMs):
- On equipment and machinery
- On pipeline system equipment (e.g., valves, vacuum breakers, air release valves)
- Working with gaskets, springs, and hand tools
- General facility upkeep:
- Cleaning (hosing down basins, sweeping, organizing, vault housekeeping)
Minimum Qualifications
ELIGIBILITY:
To be eligible for this opportunity, you must:
- Be currently enrolled in or have completed in the last six months: Engineering, Science, or Water Related Program.
- Be able to commit at least 15-20 hours a week.
- Live within 150 miles of their primary physical work location by their start date.
- Proof of enrollment or graduation required prior to start date.
- Pass pre-employment screening process including reference, background, and criminal checks.
