General Summary: In-House Counsel provides legal guidance to support business goals, drafts and reviews contracts, ensures regulatory compliance, manages risks, pursues legal remedies, and advises on general legal matters. They also collaborate with stakeholders to deliver practical legal solutions in a dynamic environment.
Essential Job Duties:
- Ensure compliance with Federal, State, and Local governments and trade regulatory requirements such as Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA), Department of Transportation (DOT), Department of Labor (DOL), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Payment Card Industry (PCI), and other relevant entities.
- Ensure compliance with laws on alcohol and tobacco sales, lottery/gaming, and other industry-related activities.
- Oversee maintenance, preparation, review, and advice on agreements with vendors including product supply contracts, equipment leases, and service agreements.
- Provide legal guidance on property leases, site acquisitions, and zoning compliance to meet business goals.
- Advise on labor issues, including wage and hour compliance, employee safety, and employee policies.
- Ensure compliance with consumer protection laws, such as accurate pricing, advertising regulations, and product labeling requirements.
- Manage customer and vendor disputes, customer incidents (personal injury/property damage), and environmental incidents, coordinating with external counsel as needed.
- Safeguard company intellectual property (branding, trademarks, and proprietary materials), addressing issues such as counterfeiting or trademark infringement.
- Collaborate with and advise respective departments on maintenance and updates to employee policies to ensure compliance and mitigate legal risks with industry-specific operational matters.
- Serves as liaison for regulatory agency inspections, inquiries, and audits.
- Partners with various department leaders to ensure timely completion of all required compliance training.
- Conduct legal research and stay updated on changes in laws that may affect the company.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school
- Active license to practice law in Kentucky
- Five years of legal experience is preferred, preferably in corporate law, contracts, or compliance
- Strong knowledge of business and regulatory law
- Analytical thinker, effective communicator, and ability to work collaboratively in professional corporate environment in professional manner
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
- Valid Driver’s License
Physical Requirements:
This position mostly involves sedentary indoor work. Settings are primarily in an office setting but may include a retail store setting and public courtrooms, etc. It may on occasion require some travel. Most travel consists of day trips, but some overnight trips may be required.
