Job Summary

The PSR Substitute Catechist supports the parish’s mission to educate and evangelize children by stepping in for regular catechists when needed. This role involves teaching pre-planned lessons, nurturing students’ understanding of the Catholic faith, and maintaining a positive, faith-filled learning environment. Substitute catechists play a vital role in ensuring continuity and consistency in the Parish School of Religion (PSR) program for students in grades 1–8.

Job Responsibilities

  • Teach PSR classes (grades 1–8) on an as-needed basis, following the provided lesson plans and approved curriculum.

  • Integrate Scripture, Catholic doctrine, Church tradition, and prayer into each session.

  • Support sacramental preparation as applicable during substitute sessions.

  • Maintain a safe, respectful, and engaging classroom environment.

  • Collaborate with the Coordinator of Religious Education and regular catechists for lesson continuity and classroom needs.

  • Communicate any relevant class updates or concerns to the Coordinator.

  • Model Catholic values and a living faith in both word and action.

  • Participate in required catechist training and comply with diocesan Safe Environment policies.

Job Requirements

  • Practicing Catholic in good standing with the Church.

  • Desire and commitment to share the Catholic faith with children.

  • Basic understanding of Catholic teachings and sacraments; willingness to learn more.

  • Reliable, flexible, and able to adapt quickly to different classroom settings.

  • Positive attitude and ability to engage with children respectfully and effectively.

  • Completion of parish/diocesan Safe Environment training and background check (required).
