NATURE PARK MAINTENANCE WORKER (FLYING CREEK NATURE PRESERVE) na City of Fairhope (AL), AL

About the Department

Under the close supervision of the Park Ranger/Urban Forester, the employee is responsible for the care and maintenance of City passive parks ensuring they are free from unseemly or overgrown vegetation, ensures the cleanliness and sanitation of park facilities, and keeps parks looking superior throughout the City. The employee maintains City nature preserves and parks cutting weeds and grass, spreading herbicides, cleaning culverts, and trimming trees and bushes. This is an entry-level gardener position within the job family. This job is considered safety-sensitive and is subject to pre-employment and random drug screens.

The schedule for this position will be Tuesday - Saturday, 40 hours per week.

Position Duties

ESSENTIAL FUNCTION: Equipment Maintenance. Assists in the general maintenance of assigned City equipment used in property maintenance.

1. Performs pre-work safety inspections of equipment and performs preventative maintenance; greases, check fluids, tire pressure, gas, and gauges.
2. Ensures assigned equipment is fueled.
3. Reports equipment maintenance status to supervisor.
4. Performs work or may assist crew leader or other repairmen with minor mechanical repairs.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTION:  Landscape Maintenance and Horticulture Activities.   The employee performs duties with the landscape maintenance of City-managed properties and horticulture assets to ensure a pleasant and attractive appearance.

1. Assists planting trees, shrubs, and flowers at correct depths.
2. Assists in detecting and treating fungus or insect growth on flowers and shrubs.
3. Assists with grounds inspections to ensure safety of the public and fellow workers; notes possible safety hazards or causes of injury acts to report/correct issue.
4. Detects imperfections in the landscape, whether it be litter, improper grass mowing, or improper pruning advises supervisor for corrections.
5. Follows instructions regarding plant, pruning and fertilizing plants to ensure proper growth.
6. Mows grass and edges along curbs and other obstacles.
7. Prunes and trims trees and shrubs as directed, in a manner approved by the International Society of Arboriculture.
8. Applies fertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides according to manufacturer’s directions as directed.
9. Lays sod; plants bushes, shrubs, and trees as assigned.
10. Loads and unloads equipment, debris, and material.
11. Drives vehicles to and from job sites.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTION: Custodial Duties. The employee performs custodial duties ensuring cleanliness of assigned City facilities (John Martin Nature Center)

1. Ensure the assigned facilities are properly cleaned and sanitized.
2. Assists in litter pickup throughout designated parks and nature preserves 
3. Cleans and disinfects restrooms.
4. Restocks paper items and cleaning supplies.
5. Sweeps, strips, mops, waxes, and buffs floors.
6. Empties and washes trash cans; replaces liners in trash cans.
7. Vacuums carpets; shampoos periodically.
8. Dusts and cleans windows.
9. Sweeps sidewalks and porches.
10. Gathers trash around the building.
11. Dusts furniture and cleans blinds and counters.
12. Replenishes and restocks bathroom consumables.
13. Cleans kitchen/break facilities.
14. Rearranges furniture as needed.

1. Opens and closes buildings as required.
2. Inventories cleaning supplies and notes needed items; orders supplies.
3. Prepares and mixes cleaning solutions according to labeled concentrate instructions.
4. Performs simple plumbing procedures (i.e., clear plugged toilet) as required 
5. Maintains activity log and supply inventory.

NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTION:

1. Assists with Public Works crews if needed and assigned.
2. Assists with City special events such as placing barricades and barriers.
3. Assists with traffic control as assigned 
4. Responds to emergency calls during hurricanes, inclement weather, or other emergency situations.
5. Performs other job-related duties as required or assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

1. Possess a high school diploma or GED.
2. Minimum of one (1) year of work experience operating light equipment in landscape maintenance, construction or maintenance work, and custodial duties; or any combination of education, training and experience that demonstrates the above listed knowledge, skills, and abilities commensurate with the requirements of this job.
3. Possess a current and valid driver’s license; must be insurable.
4. Ability to work overtime, weekends, or emergencies as needed.
5. Ability to travel throughout City to perform job functions.
6. Ability to pass a pre-employment background check and an initial drug screen.

14. Hand/eye coordination skills to operate various machinery, power, and hand tools (i.e., mop, drip torch, blower, chainsaw) and make fine adjustments.
15. Ability to carry a drip torch and assist in prescribed burns throughout the city parks and nature preserves. 
16. Ability to understand and follow oral and/or written policies, procedures, and instructions.

Physical Demands
The work requires considerable and strenuous physical exertion such as frequent climbing of tall ladders, lifting heavy objects over 50 lbs., crouching, or crawling in restricted areas.

Work Environment
The work environment involves high risks with exposure to potentially dangerous situations or unusual environmental stress which require a range of safety and other precautions, e.g., working at great heights under extreme weather conditions, or similar situations where conditions cannot be controlled.
