About the Department

Summary Objective
The purpose of this position is to interview and evaluate inmates to determine proper living quarters within the correctional facility; explain policies, procedures, and daily schedules; communicate and answer questions from inmates; manage the inventory, distribution, collection, and maintenance of inmate tablets within the correctional facility. This class works under general supervision, independently developing work methods and sequences.

Position Duties

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The essential functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the class as necessary.

UNDER GENERAL SUPERVISION

INTAKE:

  • Interviews inmates, and assesses their behavioral, medical, sociological, psychological, and economic backgrounds to determine their proper living quarters within the correctional facility.

  • Explains correctional facility rules, procedures, and services; pre-trail and court operations; and inmate rights and privileges.

  • Assesses inmate housing assignments following disturbances and significant occurrences, confers with staff to resolve inmate problems.

  • Performs related work as assigned.

FLOOR TEAM:

  • Communicates and answers questions from inmates, listens to their complaints and problems, provides direction and advice, or refers their concerns to proper authorities.

  • Reviews and updates inmate classification and living quarters as needed.

  • Performs related work as assigned.

TABLETS:

  • Manage tablet inventory, distribute tablets to individuals in custody, instruct inmates on how to operate tablets and ensure their understanding of tablet policies and procedures, collect tablets, inspect, and sanitize collected tablets, reports any missing or damaged devices to management, coordinate with tablet vendor regarding repairs and inventory.

  • Performs related work as assigned.

TABLETS RELIEF:

  • Manage tablet inventory, distribute tablets to individuals in custody, instruct inmates on how to operate tablets and ensure their understanding of tablet policies and procedures, collect tablets, inspect, and sanitize collected tablets, reports any missing or damaged devices to management, coordinate with tablet vendor regarding repairs and inventory.

  • The person in the position will not be moved from their current working area/assignment, however, will assist when needed.

  • Performs related work as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • High School Graduation or GED equivalent.

  • One (1) year of counseling, social or community service, or criminal justice experience or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

OTHER MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be a minimum of 18 years of age.

  • Must not have been convicted of a felony.

  • Misdemeanor convictions will be considered on an individual basis.

  • Must submit to a pre-employment polygraph test.

  • Must wear personal protective equipment as mandated by OSHA.

  • Must be vaccinated for hepatitis B, have provided evidence of immunity, or have signed a declination form within ten days of initial assignment.

  • Must pass an annual tuberculin test.

SPECIAL REQUIRMENTS:

  • Applicants and employees in positions which perform job duties that may require contact with offenders in the custody or supervision of the Department of Juvenile Justice or with youth in the care, custody or supervision of Youth Development must meet qualifications pursuant to the federal Prison Rape Elimination Act, 28 CFR 115.17 and 115.317, to include periodic post-employment criminal background checks.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.

  • Performs sedentary work that involves walking or standing some of the time and involves exerting up to 10 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis or sustained keyboard operations.
