About the Department

Under general direction, the Pretrial PICU Coordinator will directly and positively impact those pretrial inmates in jail that can be reconsidered for release by making numerous daily reviews of the Personal Recognizance (PR) applications previously denied at the magistrate level. The Pretrial PICU Coordinator will also work closely to coordinate and expedite release orders/directives with the Pretrial Intake Manager, Pretrial Operations Manager, Jail Administrators, County and District Court Judges, Coordinators and Administrators, Visiting Judges at the Jail Court, the CMAG Coordinator, Bexar County Sheriff’s Office Detention Population Monitor and City Magistrates on those inmates identified with situations such as inmates in jail with only a charge Remanded Without Bond over 10 days, inmates in jail with only pre-indicted charges over 80 days, inmates in jail with only out of county charges over 10 days, and inmates in jail with pretrial charges who may have already spent a reasonable amount of time in jail and could qualify for release with time served or a plea agreement for Probation.

Position Duties

  • Reviews and researches PR applications pending or previously denied on the magistrate level for reconsideration by criminal court judges for PR Bonds
  • Reviews, researches and troubleshoots jail population listings to identify inmates ready and or eligible for release
  • Coordinates with County Offices and/or Law Enforcement Agencies expediting release orders/Court directives
  • Coordinates with County & District Criminal Courts to facilitate bond settings and/or court settings for consideration of time served or a plea agreement
  • Coordinates releasing processes for approved PICU PR Bond releases with the Pretrial Intake Manager and supervisors
  • Coordinates releasing processes for non-PICU PR Bond releases with Bexar County Sheriff’s Office releasing Sgt.
  • Develops and maintains a tracking system to identify and monitor Pretrial PICU impact on jail population
  • Prepares and submits statistical report identifying all inmates screened, researched and released by PICU
  • Reports any discrepancies on policies/procedures relating to the adult inmate population to the Pretrial Intake Manager and Operations Manager
  • Performs related duties as required

Minimum Qualifications

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice, Humanities, Public Administration or closely related field, and five (5) years’ experience in jail administration, operations, and Criminal Justice system; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Considerable knowledge in detention or corrections, as it pertains to inmate classification; knowledge or policy development for implementation in correctional or detention facilities; knowledge of grant resources; knowledge of legislation related to incarceration and bond eligibility guidelines; and knowledge of criminal justice system
  • Skill in communicating effectively with diverse groups or individuals utilizing tact and diplomacy; and skill in managing projects simultaneously
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing; ability to understand statistical data; ability to assess adult inmate and juvenile detainee population issues regarding legal standards and requirements; ability to adjust to rapidly fluctuating situations; ability to operate personal computer and basic office equipment; and ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with subordinates, County employees, Department Heads, Elected/Appointed Officials, attorneys, outside organizations, news media, and the public
  • Must have a valid Texas Criminal Information Center/National Criminal Information Center Certification
  • Must have valid Texas driver’s license, motor vehicle liability insurance and personal injury insurance; or have a self-reliant source of transportation to conduct business on a daily basis  
  • Must secure and maintain a favorable background investigation and clearance
  • Must clear a pre-employment physical and a pre-employment drug screen test
  • May be required to work more than 40 hours during the workweek; may work weekends

  • Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery
