As a Database Engineer, you will design, implement, and maintain secure, highly available, and scalable database solutions in hybrid computing environments that support business continuity objectives and follow industry best practices.

  • You will collaborate with cross-functional teams to design and implement highly available (HA) database platforms that meet business and continuity requirements.
  • You will develop and deploy database solutions, contributing to the definition and enforcement of development standards and best practices.
  • You will design, build, and maintain Extract, Transform, Load (ETL) processes to ensure accurate and efficient data integration.
  • You will manage database backup and recovery strategies to safeguard data integrity and availability.
  • You will implement and maintain database security controls, including access management, authentication, encryption, and compliance with standards (e.g., PCI-DSS, HIPAA).
  • You will monitor and tune database performance, proactively identifying issues and driving resolutions to meet uptime and SLA goals.
  • You will develop automation solutions using PowerShell, Python, or SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS) to improve efficiency and reduce manual tasks..
  • You will maintain technical documentation, including architecture diagrams, configuration guidelines, and operational procedures, to support team knowledge and compliance.
  • You will collaborate closely with application developers, system administrators, and business stakeholders to deliver database solutions that meet project and operational needs.
  • You will administer and optimize databases across on-premises and cloud environments (e.g., Azure SQL), ensuring seamless integration, performance, and security across platforms.

  • Experienced – You have two (2) years of experience in Information Technology.
  • Desired – We hope you have a Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or Business Administration. We also hope you have experience in database engineering or administration.

  • Technical Expertise: You are skilled in SQL Server deployment and configuration, T-SQL development, backup and recovery, security, performance tuning, data modeling, server virtualization, and automation scripting. Experience with Azure SQL, database migration, big data technologies, and NoSQL databases strengthens your profile.

  • Problem Solver: You demonstrate strong troubleshooting and analytical skills, anticipating and addressing issues in high-pressure environments.

  • Continuous Learner – You stay current with emerging database technologies, trends, and best practices, and you bring new ideas to improve team capabilities.

  • Work Schedule – Your normal work schedule will be Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (40 hours per week). Slightly more flexible start and end times are available in this role. You may be required to work all assigned shifts, including weekends and holidays. You may be required to work during emergencies. You will have to respond promptly while on call to any IT outages, even outside regular work hours and must be prepared to be onsite if necessary to resolve technology issues.
  • Work Environment - This work will take place in a hybrid/in-office setting at Management’s discretion. However, for the first six (6) months, you will be expected to work in the office regularly.
  • Washington State Residency Requirement – Employees must establish a residence in Washington state within 30 days of their first day of employment and must maintain a residence in Washington State during their employment with the Port of Seattle. If a position is eligible to telework, work performed while teleworking must be performed in Washington State.
  • Security Requirements – As the successful candidate, you must pass a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) background check as well as a criminal history background check with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Your employment will be contingent upon obtaining a Port of Seattle ID badge upon clearance.
  • Security Requirements – In this role, you will be required to access Port of Seattle Police Department equipment, office locations, systems and/or vehicles. In compliance with Federal and State laws as the successful candidate, you will be required to pass a Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) criminal history background check.
