ArcelorMittal is seeking a high initiative, self-directed welding engineer with strong expertise in physical/welding metallurgy, experience with various sheet metal welding processes and familiarity with performance evaluation of joints. The successful candidate will manage activities to generate welding data for ArcelorMittal’s sheet steel products and characterize the mechanical performance of welded joints under different loading conditions. Additionally, the candidate will also be expected to conduct R&D activities, work collaboratively with other ArcelorMittal R&D facilities and with customers in the general area of welding and joining of sheet steel products.
Responsibilities & Accountabilities:
- Conduct weldability evaluation of sheet steel products developed by ArcelorMittal.
- Evaluate mechanical performance of joints to support CAE prediction of automotive body structures under different loading modes with high accuracy.
- Manage and execute R&D projects and customer support projects with minimal supervision and in a timely manner.
Job Duties:
- Manage weld testing program to generate and analyze data in support of product qualifications and provide test results in a timely manner.
- Conduct R&D activities on automotive welding processes for emerging advanced high strength steel grades to develop efficient joining solutions for complex microstructures.
- Conduct mechanical testing of welded joints under conditions representative of automotive crash events. Provide results and guidance to CAE engineers to improve prediction of weld performance.
- Provide technical support to customers on welding related issues.
- Work in a team environment using shared laboratory resources.
- Communicate results in a time-efficient and effective manner to the appropriate stakeholders to enable efficient decision making.
- Occasionally travel to customer facilities to participate in technical exchanges
- Comply with the company’s Health & Safety policy
Minimum Education Requirements: M. S. in Welding Engineering or M. S. in Materials Science with minimum of 3 years’ experience in welding related project activities
Preferred Education Requirements: Ph. D. in Welding Engineering or Materials Science
Minimum Experience:
- Strong expertise in welding/physical metallurgy
- Experience in mechanical testing of welded joints
- Familiarity with different joining processes used in the automotive industry
- Experience in optical and electron microscopy
Preferred Experience:
- Experience in adhesive bonding and mechanical joining.
- Experience in using weld modeling software such as SYSWELD, SORPAS, SIMUFACT or similar programs
