Job Title: Advanced Composites Manufacturing Specialist
Are you passionate about, research and development and advancing composite manufacturing? Fraunhofer USA Center Midwest is seeking a skilled and motivated Advanced Composites Manufacturing Specialist to contribute to our cutting-edge structural composites research projects. As Advanced Composites Manufacturing Specialist, you will play a pivotal role in composites product development using additive manufacturing and conventional composite manufacturing processes. You will create structural composite parts using robotic tape layup and other techniques as needed by the application. You will also perform experimental testing, surface treatments, numerical modeling and electron microscopy characterization. You will also drive process and product development and associated innovative solutions in composites manufacturing to meet customer needs for novel applications.

The Fraunhofer USA Center Midwest is located on the campus of Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan. The Center focuses on next-generation materials for a variety of markets, including, automotive, energy, environment, and health. The Center’s technology portfolio includes additive manufacturing, coatings, composite materials, diamond materials, electrochemical sensors, laser applications, plasma sources and water treatment.
Fraunhofer USA Center Midwest is seeking a highly motivated, reliable, and technically competent individual to join our team as a Advanced Composites Manufacturing Specialist In this role you will play an integral part within our diverse team of experts facilitating applied research projects between Fraunhofer USA and Fraunhofer transatlantic affiliates.
This is a salaried position offering benefits that include health and dental insurance, life insurance, paid vacation, and a pension plan. The business core working hours are 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. with an average working week of 40 hours. Project-dependent work hours may be shifted outside of the core working hours as needed.
Responsibilities:
- Uphold lab upkeep and maintenance standards to ensure a safe and efficient research environment
and management of ongoing projects - Advancing composite manufacturing via robotic fiber placement and additive manufacturing.
- Experimental and Numerical Characterization of fiber-reinforced composites.
- Support new product development using innovative and rapid manufacturing techniques.
- Interact with a variety of groups from academia, industry, and government
- Manuscript writing for peer-reviewed publications
- Supervision of undergraduate and graduate students, and interns
- Technical report writing of engineering projects
- Ensure project and lab compliance with environmental, safety, health, and quality program (ISO9001) requirements
- Other duties as assigned
Required Qualifications:
- PhD. required in Mechanical Engineering, Structural Engineering, Materials Science or a related engineering or science field with a strong background in composite materials or equivalent experience.
- Prior experimental/hands-on expertise in composite manufacturing and testing.
- Prior expertise in numerical modeling of layered composites.
- Excellent technical writing and oral communication skills
- Ability to independently identify, develop and implement scientific solutions to practical problems
- Able to set priorities and adapt to changing needs as well as the proven ability to function well in as fast-paced environment
- Able to work in an interdisciplinary, diverse, and international team
Preferred Qualifications (not required):
- Prior working experience in surface preparation for adhesion promotion.
- Prior working experience with programming languages.
