Main Purpose and Function
This is child care work in implementing and leading a variety of activities for children participating in a 3-5 group childcare program. An employee of this class is involved in delivering activities which will promote child development and learning. An employee of this class also provides assistance to a superior in planning programs and activities and in carrying out administrative details. Independent judgment is exercised in dealing with routine matters and minor problems.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities
The Child Activity Leader position reports to the Senior Supervisor.
The work is evaluated by a supervisor through discussion, perusal of activity reports, and observation.
- Delivers a variety of children’s activities, based on developmental needs and the BC Early Learning Framework, including working with a Pedagogist, Atelierista, inquiry-based curriculum and pedagogical narrations as a practice.
- Assists in planning, coordination and assessment of programs and activities to promote the care and education of all children.
- Assists in providing training and work direction to auxiliary, students and volunteers.
- Informs parents of their child’s progress; provides guidance and advice to parents as required, and assist in family and fundraising events
- Assists in identifying individual care needs of children, works with team to identify resources and supports, and follows prescribed routines and adaptive equipment.
- As directed, liaises with a variety of agencies and consultants such as social workers, public health workers, physical and occupational therapists.
- Maintains a variety of records related to the work; assists in the drafting of newsletters and program bulletins; recommends the acquisition of materials and equipment.
- Follows all regulatory and organizational policies and procedures.
Qualifications
Education and Experience:
- Current BC ECE License to Practice Certificate
- Special Needs Certificate or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Current First Aid Certification
- Clear criminal record check
- Experience of working with children aged 2.5-5 years
- Able to work 7 hours/day with shifts between 7am – 6pm
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Sound knowledge of BC Child Care Licensing Regulations and organizational policies and procedures.
- Working knowledge practices and objectives of a licensed community care program.
- Working knowledge of the fundamentals of program leadership.
- Demonstrated knowledge and proven commitment to following the BC Early Learning Framework including, and working with a Pedagogist, Atelierista, inquiry-based curriculum and pedagogical narrations as a practice.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with parents, staff and a variety of external contacts such as social workers and therapists.
- Ability to provide training and work direction to auxiliary, students and volunteers.
- Ability to work in an inclusive program that meets the needs of individual children.
- Sound understanding of the BC Child Care Licensing Regulations.
