Job Summary: 

The Transportation & Logistics Manager is responsible for day to day execution of rail logistics.  Provide “hands on” leadership, training and proper controls to ensure logistics specialists and logistics coordinators proactively and consistently execute shipments to maximize opportunities for incentives while adhering to and understanding railroad tariff rules to avoid demurrage & miscellaneous charges in the process.  Ensure shipments are accurately rated with freight variance properly explained upon execution of the shipment.  Manage leased fleet to ensure maximum utilization of the fleet and properly manage leases to maximize potential while minimizing Gavilon’s forward risk. 

 

Essential Job Functions:

  • Consistent day-to-day execution of documentation and workflow for shipments across all grain regions
  • Recapping and reporting issues, fleet utilization, leased fleet analysis, and car program utilization to Division President along with proposed solutions to maximize opportunities while minimizing risk
  • Ensure consistent loading and adherence to railroad tariff rules including proper bill of lading, maximize weights without overloads, and manage seal program & documentation
  • File all claims for loss, damage, shuttle load & unload, and collect in a timely manner
  • Address and document derailments and report progress to management consistently through the process
  • Track all unit trains and file claims for all load and unload incentives in a consistent manner across all regions
  • Coordinate and participate in all weekend rail logistics overage for the team
  • Maintain positive relationships with merchandisers, accounting and other member of the team and customers
  • Monitor day-to-day car position execution and coordinate logistics across the network
  • Negotiate railcar leases and options as agreed to with management
  • Administer, track, and negotiate terms on all railcar lease contracts with the legal department
  • Monitor Fleet on a daily basis to ensure maximum utilization
  • Monitor all Fleet repairs, freight and other charges to minimize expense and exposure
  • Properly train and motivate direct reports to execute shipments accurately and consistently
  • Demonstrate regular attendance and timeliness in reporting to work, meetings and completing assignments

 

Other Job Functions:

 

  • Help to ensure timely, accurate responses to requests internally
  • Promote and establish a proactive team approach
  • Assist merchandiser/traders with contractual concerns in coordinating shipments
  • Cross-train across regions to build network
  • Help build a culture to be “revenue generators” by executing in the most efficient and proactive manner

     

    Qualifications/Education/Experience/Skills:

 

  • Ability to work and interact well with others
  • 10+ years’ experience working with railroads or equivalent experience
  • Bachelor’s Degree in business or related work experience required
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Ability to multi-task with high attention to detail
  • Ability meet deadlines in a fast-paced work environment
  • Team-oriented
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access
