About the Department

Under the direction of the Maintenance Supervisor, performs a variety of assignments related to overseeing the RTD’s electrical/electronic equipment and systems.  The incumbent of this class works with all activities related to any electrical or radio technological needs for RTD. Class B Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP) with passenger and airbrake endorsements must be obtained prior to hire date.  This position is a union represented position.  Shift subject to change per requirements of the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Position Duties

The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work performed by people assigned to this classification.   • Locates and diagnoses electrical, electronic, and mechanical systems using standard test equipment;
  • Diagnoses, repairs, installs and maintains stationary and mobile radio, and AVL communication equipment, video cameras and equipment, fare boxes, and fare vending machines, electronic destination signs, and annunciation systems;
  • Performs on bus equipment inspection, parts removal and installation work;
  • Perform minor repairs to circuit boards, such as soldering and/or replacement of capacitors, resistors and switches;
  • Operates VOA meters, meggers, oscilloscopes, fluke multi meters, and other test equipment, as required, and performs periodic and preventive maintenance as required.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge of:

  1. Techniques, methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the repair and maintenance of basic electronics
  2. The use of hand tools and power tools in the workplace 
  3. Proper procedures for ensuring workplace safety including the use of lockout tags and proper notification processes

Ability to:

  1. Use written instructions, specifications, blueprints, schematics, drawings, and wiring diagrams
  2. Establish and build upon tools necessary to perform work on this type of electrical/electronic equipment
  3. Train individuals and set a professional example for RTD personnel
  4. Function in a computer centered environment
  5. Effectively communicate both orally and in writing
  6. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with RTD staff, and other businesses and agencies
  7. Be a self-starter, and work without supervision 
  8. Maintain a positive and professional disposition, demeanor and attitude with all customers, co-workers, staff, and supervisors at all times


Education, Training and Experience:

A typical way of obtaining the knowledge, skills, and abilities outlined above is: 

Requires a high school diploma or GED equivalent. 

Experience in advanced electronic trouble shooting and state-of-the-art 2-way mobile radio communications and AVL systems; electronic registering fare boxes, ticket issuing equipment; electronic destination signs video cameras, and annunciation systems etc.  Six (6) years hands on experience or an equivalent combination of training and experience.   Transit experience is highly desirable.

Licenses; Certificates; Special Requirements: 
  • Valid California Class C driver license or higher.
  • Must be able to obtain, at your own expense, a California Class B Learner’s permit with both Passenger (P) and Air Brake endorsements.  (You do not need a Class B license or permit at time of application).
  • Possession of or the ability to obtain a California Class B commercial Driver License with Passenger (P) and Airbrakes endorsement within ninety (90) days of employment.
  • An official DMV Driving Record (K4) must be provided for consideration.
  • Satisfactory driving record as a condition of continued employment.
  • A technical training certificate is highly desirable.
  • Required to bring own tools and toolbox upon date of hire.
  • Experience in a public transit agency or governmental setting is preferred.

    Physical Demands:   
    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; talk or hear, both in person and by telephone; use hands to finger, handle or feel objects or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is frequently required to stand and walk.  The employee regularly lifts or moves up to 25 pounds and occasionally up to 50 pounds.   Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

    Mental Demands:  
    While performing the duties of this class, the incumbent is regularly required to use written and oral communication skills; read and interpret data, information and documents; observe and interpret people and situations; analyze and solve operational problems; use math and mathematical reasoning; perform detailed work on multiple concurrent tasks; work with constant interruptions; work under intensive deadlines and interact with RTD managers, employees, other governmental officials, union representatives, customers and the public.

    The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this class.  While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently works near moving mechanical part and is occasional exposed to hot, wet and/or humid conditions, fumes, toxic or caustic chemicals. The noise level is moderately noisy.

INSURANCE: RTD provides a comprehensive health and dental insurance package for all full-time employees and their dependents.  RTD also provides $20,000 life insurance for all full-time employees.

SICK LEAVE:
  Three (3) to twelve (12) days per year depending on length of service for full-time employees, per the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

VACATION:
  One (1) week to six (6) weeks depending on the classification level and length of service for full-time employees, per the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

RETIREMENT: Covered under the provisions of the new Public Employees Pension Reform Act (PEPRA).
