Position Overview:

The Assistant Distribution Center Manager (ADCM) supports the Distribution Center Manager (DCM) in overseeing daily operations and ensuring the efficient, safe, and cost-effective execution of all distribution center (DC) functions. As a key operational partner to the DCM, the ADCM helps coordinate departmental supervisors, manage workflow across teams, and drive alignment with company culture, core values, and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). This role plays a critical part in maintaining operational discipline, supporting continuous improvement, and ensuring the facility is well-prepared to meet customer expectations in a fast-paced, high-volume environment. The ADCM also serves as acting leader in the absence of the DCM to ensure seamless operational continuity.



Key Responsibilities:

1. Facility & Operational Leadership

  • Assist the DCM in providing direction and oversight for the assigned DC.
  • Support the execution of performance goals and operational standards across departments.
  • Serve as an onsite leader, ensuring daily workflow is balanced and operational priorities are met.
  • Ensure operational teams remain focused on order accuracy, timeliness, and customer service standards.


2. Day-to-Day Operations Management

  • Supervise daily activities across receiving, inventory, order fulfillment, packing, shipping, and logistics.
  • Monitor workload distribution and adjust labor assignments to support volume surges and seasonal fluctuations.
  • Reinforce compliance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), safety protocols, and quality standards.
  • Partner with DC Supervisors and Leads to ensure consistent execution of tasks.


3. KPI Tracking & Reporting

  • Assist the DCM in monitoring operational KPIs (e.g., order accuracy, on-time shipping, labor utilization, productivity).
  • Provide daily and weekly reporting on team performance, identifying areas for process improvement.
  • Use data and operational insights to make recommendations that drive efficiency and reduce costs.


4. Team Leadership & Development

  • Supervise and coach DC Supervisors, Team Leads, and associates, fostering accountability, teamwork, and high performance.
  • Support recruiting, onboarding, and training activities to ensure a skilled and engaged workforce.
  • Partner with HR on employee relations activities, ensuring consistent application of company policies.
  • Promote a positive workplace culture built on safety, respect, and continuous improvement.


5. Continuous Improvement & Innovation

  • Support the DCM in driving continuous improvement initiatives, including lean practices and process optimization.
  • Identify opportunities to streamline workflows, improve space utilization, and reduce costs.
  • Assist with evaluating and implementing technology solutions that enhance operational efficiency.


6. Facility Standards & Safety

  • Actively lead by example in promoting a strong safety culture.
  • Conduct regular safety walkthroughs, equipment checks, and compliance audits.
  • Address unsafe behaviors and conditions promptly; escalate issues to the DCM when necessary.
  • Ensure facility cleanliness, organization, and adherence to 5S or similar standards.


7. Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Collaborate with Supply Chain, IT, HR, and Inventory Control teams to ensure operational alignment.
  • Participate in cross-departmental projects and planning activities.
  • Represent the DC in leadership meetings when the DCM is unavailable.


8. Additional Duties

  • Perform all other duties as assigned.



Reporting Structure:

  • Reports directly to the Distribution Center Manager (DCM).
  • Directly supervises DC Supervisors, Team Leads, and warehouse associates within the assigned DC location.
  • Collaborates closely with cross-functional departments such as Supply Chain, Inventory Control, HR, and Safety to ensure alignment and operational excellence.



Requirements

Key Requirements:

  • Experience: Minimum of 5–7 years of progressive experience in distribution, warehouse, or fulfillment operations, with at least 2 years in a supervisory or management capacity. Experience in high-volume, multi-channel facilities preferred.
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Business, Supply Chain, Logistics, or a related field preferred; significant experience may substitute for formal education. Professional certifications in logistics, operations, or safety are a plus.
  • Skills: Strong leadership, organizational, and problem-solving skills with the ability to manage shifting priorities in a fast-paced environment. Effective communicator in English (written and verbal). Skilled in building relationships and coaching frontline teams to achieve results.
  • Knowledge: Solid understanding of warehouse processes, inventory management, labor planning, and safety compliance. Familiarity with SOPs, lean/continuous improvement practices, and performance metrics.
  • Technology: Proficiency in Warehouse Management Systems (WMS) and operational software for productivity tracking and reporting. Competent in Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Outlook, Word, PowerPoint). Ability to adapt to new technologies as needed.



Physical Requirements:

The Assistant DC Manager (DCM) role is primarily facility-based and requires physical presence throughout the distribution center (DC) to effectively lead operations. The physical demands listed below are representative of those required to successfully perform the essential functions of this position:

  • Mobility: Ability to move throughout a large, 300,000+ sq. ft. DC, including walking long distances on concrete flooring, climbing stairs, and transitioning between work areas and offices.
  • Standing and Walking: Required to stand and walk for extended periods, typically 8 to 10 hours per shift, with the possibility of longer durations based on operational needs.
  • Lifting and Carrying: Occasionally may be required to lift, carry, or move boxes, products, and materials weighing up to 50 pounds without assistance.
  • Posture and Motion: Ability to bend, reach, stoop, and twist as needed while conducting walkthroughs, inspections, or engaging with warehouse staff. May occasionally operate warehouse equipment such as pallet jacks, forklifts, order pickers, ladders, or RF scanners as required.
  • Vision and Hearing: Sufficient visual and auditory acuity to safely observe operational activities, read reports and documentation, and effectively communicate in a busy warehouse environment.
  • Work Environment: Work is performed in a fast-paced, high-volume DC with exposure to varying indoor temperatures and ambient noise from warehouse machinery and transport vehicles. This facility is not environmentally controlled and requires adaptability to heat and cold conditions.



Travel Requirements: This position may require approximately 5% travel between DMA's distribution centers, attend training events, and assist with community outreach initiatives.
