Position Overview
The Safety Specialist is responsible for supporting and enhancing the safety culture across all departments within the facility, including but not limited to, warehouse operations, administrative spaces, and maintenance areas. This position plays a key role in cultivating a proactive safety culture by working collectively with department personnel to identify hazards, ensure regulatory compliance, and facilitate training. This role primarily focuses on implementing the company’s existing safety programs as well as implementation of customer policies and procedures. The ideal candidate brings a hands-on approach to safety, strong communication skills, and working knowledge of warehousing or logistics environments.
Responsibilities
- Facility-wide safety specialist ensuring adherence to regulatory (federal, state and local), company, and customer requirements across all functional areas.
- Conduct routine inspections, risk assessments, and participate in third party audits as needed.
- Provide support and monitor completions for existing safety training programs.
- Support logistics and material handling teams in maintaining safe loading, unloading, and stowage procedures.
- Assist with safety metrics, and regulatory documentation.
- Validate warehouse storage safety compliance.
- Establish, monitor, improve, and report key safety metrics with a focus on customer satisfaction.
- Improve warehouse organization / layout to reduce cycle time to receive, pull and ship or issue material.
- Additional duties as directed by Shore Manager and/or EHS Manager.
- Position will require travel to international depots to manage vessel safety issues.
Qualifications
Qualifications
- 4-year college degree in environmental health and safety, and valid driver’s license (without restriction).
- 2-5 years of experience preferred in implementing OSHA 1910 and EPA compliance requirements, including but not limited to: LOTO, Hazardous Communication, RCRA, Risk Analysis & Assessment, incident and accident investigation, and DOT requirements.
- Forklift operation experience (up to 55k capacity) preferred or willingness to become certified.
- Ability to assess risks across a variety of environments, from industrial workspaces to administrative offices.
- Strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills for cross-functional collaboration and training delivery. Must possess ability to hold monthly safety meetings with stakeholders.
- Ability to drive change and influence teams in a positive, safety-conscious manner while implementing the company’s Life Saving Rules.
