A Brief Overview
The Safety and Wellbeing Social Worker is a key member of the Safety and Wellbeing Program at Children's Nebraska, dedicated to advancing a culture where safety and wellbeing are inseparable, proactive, and human-centered. This role focuses on prevention, relationship-building, education, and supportive response to ensure the physical and emotional safety of patients, families, and team members. The Safety and Wellbeing Social Worker partners with multidisciplinary teams to identify risks early, implement supportive care planning, and strengthen system-wide practices that promote wellbeing. This individual also serves as a subject matter expert, educator, and advocate, helping to embed safety and wellbeing practices throughout the organization.
Essential Functions
- Prevention & Resilience-Building – Conduct proactive assessments and safety screenings to identify patients, families, or team members who may benefit from additional support. – Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to develop care plans that integrate both safety and wellbeing goals, ie BERT and Collaborative Care Plans. – Provide emotional support, coaching, and skill-building to patients, caregivers, and team members to strengthen resilience and reduce risk.
- Education & Culture Development – Partner with the Safety and Wellbeing Council and Program Manager to design and deliver training programs on trauma-informed care, safety practices, wellbeing strategies, crisis intervention, and de-escalation. – Serve as a role model and subject matter expert, reinforcing the Council’s mission through daily interactions and education. – Stay current with advancements in safety science, social work, and behavioral health to inform ongoing culture-building efforts.
- Collaboration & System Learning – Work across disciplines—including nursing, medical providers, security, and leadership—to promote integrated, organization-wide approaches to safety and wellbeing. – Facilitate huddles, capture outcomes, and contribute to system learning by documenting and sharing insights with the Safety and Wellbeing Council. – Support follow-up and accountability processes that reinforce Council-driven initiatives and Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) cycles.
- Response & Recovery Support – Provide supportive intervention and de-escalation techniques when safety concerns arise, ensuring the wellbeing of patients, caregivers, and team members. – Apply evidence-based practices to assess and respond to crises while supporting recovery for all involved. – Mentor and support team members in effective crisis response and recovery practices.
- Advocacy & Resource Connection – Advocate for patients, families, and team members to ensure their safety and wellbeing needs are addressed in care planning and organizational processes. – Connect individuals with appropriate resources, including community supports, employee assistance, and follow-up services. – Elevate trends, needs, and recommendations to the Safety and Wellbeing Program Manager and Social Work leader to inform system-level improvements.

Education Qualifications
- Master's Degree from an accredited college or university in Social Work Required
Experience Qualifications
- Minimum three years experience of as a Social Worker in a clinical setting Required and
- Experience in medical social work and/or mental health setting Preferred
Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of psychological principles, child and adolescent development, inter-relational dynamics, individual and group behavior, and behavior modification techniques. (High proficiency)
- Requires knowledge of human behavior, social problems, counseling modalities, and community resources. (High proficiency)
- Ability to concentrate and pay close attention to detail when providing therapeutic interventions, observing patient response, scoring tests, and documenting patient progress. (High proficiency)
- Demonstrates knowledge and skill in providing age-appropriate care to children, adolescents, adults, and families. (High proficiency)
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in written form, relaying case information to patients/families, physicians, and other healthcare professionals, attorneys and law enforcement as needed. (High proficiency)
Licenses and Certifications
- Current and Valid Masters Social Worker and Independent Mental Health Practitioner licensure in the state of Nebraska is preferred. Will consider provisionally licensed and licensed Social Workers based on experience. Upon Hire Required
- A valid driver's license and an acceptable motor vehicle record/driving record Required
- All Social Workers may be required to participate in Transplant program functions. This Social Work role includes: • Pre and Post-transplant psychosocial assessment of patients and families • Present psychosocial information to the selection committee • Provide transplant program patients and families specific resource information
