POSITION:   Preventative Maintenance Youth Apprentice

 

LOCATION:  Department of School Facilities

 

POSITION SUMMARY: Performs preventive maintenance on various types of mechanical equipment throughout Calvert County Public Schools’ Facilities, under the supervision and direction of a licensed technician. To assist in the implementation of a maintenance program and carry out all assigned duties. Ensure that all school system buildings and equipment are kept in a condition of operating excellence and full utilization is always available for use.

  

REPORTS TO:    Director of School Facilities, Supervisor of Maintenance, Supervisor of Operations, or designee.

 

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND EXPERIENCE:    At the time of employment, the candidate must:

  1. Be approved for participation in the Apprenticeship Maryland Program pathway as a current Calvert County Public Schools student

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, AND SKILLS:    (These are pre-employment knowledge, abilities, and skills that apply to the Essential Job Functions.)

At the time of the application, the candidate must have the following: 

  1. Must be able keep accurate records of preventative maintenance performed.
  2. Have the ability to understand the use of tools to complete assigned tasks.
  3. Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  4. Have the ability to read and write.
  5. Excellent interpersonal skills.
  6. Such alternatives to the above qualifications, as Calvert County Public Schools may find appropriate and acceptable.
  7. Demonstrated success in accomplishing tasks akin to those responsibilities listed below.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS, DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Performs preventative maintenance, minor repairs, and assist in the maintenance of all mechanical equipment including but not limited to pumps, motors, compressors, bottle fillers and air scrubbers in addition to belt adjustments, oiling, greasing and cleaning of the same
  2. Apprentices will have increasing responsibility as they progress through the apprenticeship.
  3. Assists with preventive maintenance HVAC equipment including exhaust fans, air handling units and unit ventilators including the scheduled changing of filters.
  4. Works at elevated heights using ladders, scaffolds and lifts.
  5. Lifts and moves heavy objects and performs manual labor.
  6. Interprets instructions, drawings and O/M manuals.
  7. Assists in the establishment of an inventory of equipment specific to each building, including manufacturers, serial numbers and model numbers. Compiles associated information that pertains to equipment in order to establish a database for procurement of parts, supplies, materials needed for inventory.
  8. Strives to maintain and improve professional competence.
  9. Monitors appropriate use and care of equipment, materials, and facilities.
  10. Maintains regular, on-time attendance.
  11. Thinks, concentrates, and interacts positively with others.

OTHER DUTIES:(Duties listed are not intended to be all inclusive nor limit duties that might reasonably be assigned.)Performs related work as required or assigned by the Director of School Facilities, Supervisor of Maintenance, Supervisor of Operations, or designee.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:  Requires moderate physical effort, including lifting and carrying objects weighing up to fifty (50) pounds. Position may require long periods of standing and lifting of materials needed to complete assignments.

 

UNUSUAL DEMANDS:   None

 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:    Apprentice assignment. Hours reimbursed at current Maryland State minimum wage rate.  If chosen for this position, the candidate is encouraged to enroll in direct deposit.

 

FLSA STATUS:  Exempt

 

EVALUATION:   Performance will be evaluated in accordance with the apprenticeship agreement.

 

EFFECTIVE DATE OF POSITION:  October 1, 2025.  The position will end on June 15, 2026 or once the apprentice has completed 450 on the job hours total.

References must be directly related to educational experience and must include immediate supervisor.

Federal law requires that a new employee must complete the Employment Eligibility Verification (Form I-9) in person before beginning employment. Employment is conditional upon successful completion of a drug screen. Current employees of the Calvert County Public Schools are exempt from these requirements.
