About the Department

The

The Carpenter I – Lead position is a working lead. The incumbent will perform journey-level carpentry work consisting of construction, repair and maintenance of equipment in King County facilities such as Detention, Health Care Clinics and office spaces. This position will also perform lead duties such as identifying, scheduling, coordinating, planning, assigning, and overseeing the work of other crew members.

  • Main office locations include King County Courthouse in Downtown Seattle and/or the Maleng Regional Justice Center in Kent.
  • The shift for this position will be Monday - Friday, 2:30PM - 11:00PM . This schedule may vary and is subject to change dependent upon operational needs.
  • The final candidate will be required to complete a through background and criminal record check, a pre-employment physical, and have a verified Washington State driver's license, or the ability to travel throughout King County in a timely manner using County vehicles.

Who is the Facilities Management Division?
Building Operations Section (BOS) is responsible for custodial services, maintenance, and building operations as well as building security. BOS is committed to providing high quality service to effectively and efficiently support and maintain King County's buildings. BOS maintains approximately 3 million square feet in facilities where King County provides regional services including the King County Courthouse, District Courts, Maleng Regional Justice Center, King County Administration Building, King County Animal Shelter, and several Public Health facilities. Our facilities range in age from 8 to 100 years with equipment and assets that represent a similar age range.

Position Duties

In addition to Carpenter I duties, the successful candidate will demonstrate skill and/or ability at a minimum to:

  • Identify scope of work, prioritize daily work assignments and assign work to individuals.
  • Develop strategies and/or mechanical solutions for projects and existing systems. 
  • Perform systems analysis; troubleshoot.
  • Direct, coordinate and assist individuals in their regular duties.
  • Coordinate the unit’s work with other crafts.
  • Establish and maintain repair and maintenance records.
  • Establish procedures and implement training programs.
  • Calculate labor, material and equipment charges, permit fees and subcontractor costs for various projects; write purchase orders; and track materials for delivery.
  • May lead others within the same trade and/or utility workers, laborers and/or helpers on a temporary basis for specific projects.
  • Assist the foreman in planning and implementing of special projects associated with maintenance, preventative maintenance, and construction projects.
  • Respond to trouble calls, customer complaints, equipment failures and work requests.
  • Plan, design, construct, and coordinate assigned construction projects.
  • Ensure all required documents such as staff payroll records and work orders are properly filled out and turned in.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

We are looking for candidates who:

  • Have experience performing the work of a journey-level Carpenter, and able to work independently or with other Carpenters, or in a composite team with other trades.
  • Have experience in a leadership position; giving direction, planning and coordinating the work of others; Project Leadership applies.
  • Have the ability to communicate and synthesize complex ideas and concepts effectively in multiple settings with a diverse audience.
  • Are customer – focused in building and maintaining positive relationships with multiple stakeholders and team members.
  • Have experience with estimating materials and labor needed to complete work.
  • Are proficient in using Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook.
  • Have skill in problem-solving.
  • Assess, research, and recommend solutions for facility carpentry needs with assistance from coworkers and leads as needed.
MOST COMPETITVE CANDIDATES WILL HAVE:
  • Three (3) years or more of experience performing the work of a journey-level Carpenter.
  • One (1) year or more of experience in trade industry in a leadership position.

POSITION INFORMATION:

  • This recruitment is open to the general public, however King County Career Service union members interested in a lateral transfer will be considered first. 
  • This position is required to be on a paid rotating standby list for non-duty days such as weekends and holidays.
  • Main office locations include King County Courthouse in Downtown Seattle and/or the Maleng Regional Justice Center in Kent.
  • The shift for this position will be Monday - Friday, 2:30PM - 11:00PM .
  • This schedule may vary and is subject to change dependent upon operational needs.
  • The position is non-exempt from the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act and is therefore overtime-eligible.
  • Employees are paid on a bi-weekly schedule, every other Thursday, comprising a 40-hour workweek.
  • This position is represented by the Pacific Northwest Regional Council of Carpenters, 30.
ADDITIONAL POSITION INFORMATION:
  • The selected applicant must also possess a valid Washington State driver's license or the ability to travel throughout King County in a timely manner in a variety of County vehicles.
  • Final appointment is contingent upon successfully passing a stringent and thorough federal and county background investigation and clearing a pre-employment physical examination.
  • This position has been designated as a FIRST RESPONDER in the event of a proclaimed emergency, meaning this position has a role in emergency response and is responsible for the protection and preservation of life, property, evidence, environment and/or restoration of order.
