The City of Greensboro’s Department of Engineering and Inspections is seeking a skilled and motivated professional to join the Building Maintenance Division as a Maintenance Mechanic I (Plumbing). This role is critical in ensuring that our city facilities remain safe, functional, and compliant with plumbing codes while providing a high level of service to employees and the community.

About the Role
The Maintenance Mechanic I (Plumber) position requires someone to work independently to make plumbing and mechanical repairs and renovations. This position works under the direction of the Plumbing Supervisor with minimal supervision. Responsibilities include:
- The job requires good knowledge of the plumbing field, including the installation of new plumbing systems from the ground up.
- This employee should possess the ability to troubleshoot and repair existing old and new plumbing equipment.
- They must be able to operate all hand and power plumbing tools of the trade; such as drills, saws, sewer machines, electric meters, pipe threading machines, gas torches, and wire and stick welders.
- The successful applicant should have the ability to use electric meters and understand electrical control systems, possess the knowledge and ability to operate solar hot water systems, and ability to thread pipe and solder pipe.
- The employee will train and work with the plumber technicians and must have the knowledge and understanding of Occupational Safety and Health Administration policies and procedures.
- They must comply with local, State and National Plumbing codes.
- This job also requires a mechanical knowledge in order to be able to install, maintain, troubleshoot, repair and service all plumbing and sewage systems within the city facilities.
- Additional duties will include installing, maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing roll up doors, fire sprinkler systems, and all automated book drop systems in all City Library facilities.
- This individual should be able to follow written and verbal instructions and be able to perform the physical duties of the job such as bending, stooping, standing, walking, kneeling, climbing ladders, pushing, pulling, reaching and lifting up to 50 lbs.
This position requires mechanical knowledge across trades and the ability to work independently while maintaining reliability and safety standards. The employee must maintain a reliable means of contact (i.e. home or cellular phone).

What You Bring
Minimum Qualifications:
- High School Diploma/GED with 1–3 years of related plumbing experience (installing, maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing plumbing and sewage systems).
- “OR” No High School Diploma/GED with 5-7 years of related plumbing experience (installing, maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing plumbing and sewage systems).
- Valid Driver’s License.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Plumbing Contractor’s License.
- Knowledge of computer software, iPads, and/or general office equipment.
- Experience in other maintenance trades and fields (must be indicated on application).
- Experience installing, maintaining, troubleshooting, and/or repairing roll-up doors.
- Experience installing, maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing fire sprinkler systems.
- Backflow experience and/or Backflow Certification.
