Position Overview 

We are seeking a highly skilled Lead Environmental Scientist / Project Manager to oversee natural resource projects from planning through execution. This role combines advanced technical expertise with project management and leadership responsibilities. The successful candidate will conduct environmental analyses, manage permitting processes, and provide strategic guidance to ensure regulatory compliance while fostering client relationships and mentoring junior staff. 

 

Key Responsibilities 

  • Project Management: Lead and manage natural resource projects, including scope development, scheduling, contractor oversight, and budget management.
  • Technical Analysis: Evaluate complex environmental data on air, water, wildlife, vegetation, and land use to assess potential impacts.
  • Fieldwork: Perform wetland and stream delineations, threatened and endangered species surveys, habitat assessments, and land use mapping.
  • Permitting & Regulatory Compliance: Prepare permit application packages (including Section 404, Section 401, and NEPA documentation) and ensure compliance with federal, state, and local environmental regulations.
  • Reporting & Documentation: Develop comprehensive reports, environmental impact studies, and technical documents; present findings to clients, stakeholders, and regulatory agencies.
  • Mentorship & Team Leadership: Guide, train, and mentor junior scientists and project team members.
  • Business Development: Identify and pursue new opportunities, cultivate client relationships, and support proposal development.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Collaborate with public agencies, private clients, and community stakeholders to achieve project objectives and regulatory compliance.

 

Required Skills 

  • Technical Expertise: Proficiency in AutoCAD Civil 3D and related software for environmental site assessments and reporting.
  • Analytical Ability: Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills to interpret complex environmental data.
  • Communication Skills: Exceptional written and verbal communication; ability to convey scientific concepts clearly to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Leadership: Demonstrated success leading teams, mentoring staff, and managing projects effectively.
  • Regulatory Knowledge: In-depth familiarity with environmental permitting processes and applicable federal, state, and local regulations.

 

Qualifications 

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Environmental Science, Ecology, Biology, Geology, Geography, Environmental Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • 3–5+ years of professional experience in natural resource assessment, permitting, and compliance (wetland science or threatened species specialization preferred).
  • Professional certifications (e.g., Professional Wetland Scientist, PWS) strongly preferred.
  • Proven track record of successfully managing projects within scope, budget, and regulatory requirements.
