About the Department
Definition: Under direct supervision of the Roads Maintenance Field Operations Supervisor, performs an array of semi-skilled road maintenance and construction related duties. Participates in road maintenance tasks using various hand/power tools and equipment to clean, maintain, and repair Community roadways. Works in a variety of weather conditions while maintaining public safety and removing hazards. This position is treated as a FLSA non-exempt position, considered a DRIVING position and subject to working on-call and weekend hours.
Distinguishing Features: The Roads Maintenance Worker I is an entry-level class in the Roads Maintenance Worker series and is distinguished from the Road Maintenance Worker II which requires higher skill level, greater experience, ability to work independently, and the requirement for a Class B CDL. The Roads Maintenance Worker series is progression eligible.
Essential Functions: (Essential functions may vary among positions, but may include the following tasks, knowledge, ability, skill, and other characteristics. This list of tasks is ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY and is not intended to be a comprehensive listing of tasks performed by all positions in this classification.)
Position Duties
1. Assists with the maintenance and construction of Community roadway assets, which may include tasks such as saw cutting and removal of asphalt or concrete; removal of material or debris; placement of asphalt patches; and other maintenance measures. Utilizes hand tools and equipment to perform work. May operate heavy equipment that does not require a CDL such as gannons, rollers, forklifts, etc.
2. Having a basic understanding, installs, repairs, maintains and inspects roadway signage in accordance with the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD). Tasks include placing new signage, removing or repairing damaged signs, performing graffiti removal, and performing inspections.
3. Assists with the installation of traffic control devices and performs flagging for work zones. Delivers, sets up, and removes temporary traffic control in accordance with approved traffic control plan or work order.
4. Assists with the layout and installation of pavement markings. Utilizes, maintains, and repairs paint application equipment.
5. Removes vegetation and hazards that obstruct signs, block drainage systems, or otherwise affect intersection sight visibility and clear zones.
6. Performs inspections of roadway assets such as signs, streetlights, culverts, catch basins, etc. Clearly documents and reports any deficiencies.
7. Conducts daily walk around inspection of equipment prior to use to ensure that it is operating safely and properly. Cleans and services equipment after use. Performs basic routine maintenance. Reports any mechanical or operational problems to the supervisor.
8.Performs other job-related duties and special assignments as required.
Knowledges, Abilities, Skills and Other Characteristics:
- Knowledge of the history, culture, laws, rules, customs and traditions of the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community.
- Knowledge of basic methods, materials, practices, and techniques used in general construction, maintenance, and repair of roadways.
- Knowledge of basic tools and equipment used in general road construction and maintenance, including basic operation and maintenance.
- Knowledge of traffic laws, principles, and practices for safe motor vehicle operation and maintenance.
- Knowledge of applicable safety practices.
- Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with other staff and the public.
- Ability to safely operate various tools and equipment.
- Ability to troubleshoot equipment problems.
- Ability to perform semi-skilled tasks involving road construction, maintenance and repair.
- Ability to lift, move, and carry heavy objects (weighing 50 pounds or more) for long distances (more than 20 feet) and to otherwise physically perform and complete work related tasks.
- Ability to work for extended periods performing activities which require stooping, reaching, lifting, bending, and standing.
- Ability to work in a variety of weather conditions with exposure to the elements.
- Ability to effectively work with co-workers.
- Ability to communicate efficiently and effectively with both verbally and in writing managers, supervisors, staff, and the general public.
- Ability to interpret sketches and follow oral and written instructions including work orders.
- Ability to use a computer to complete leave requests, training, and other basic tasks.
- Ability to use a tablet to view, manage, document and complete work orders.
- Ability to obtain Basic Work Zone Traffic Control/Flagger certification.
- Ability to obtain a Worker Protection Standard card for pesticide application.
- Ability to follow OSHA requirements.
Minimum Qualifications
Education & Experience: Graduation from high school or GED and a minimum of one (1) year full-time work experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the tasks described.
Equivalency: Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience that would allow the candidate to satisfactorily perform the duties of this position, will be considered.
Underfill Eligibility: An enrolled Community Member whom closely qualifies for the minimum qualifications for a position may be considered for employment under SRPMIC Policy 2-19, Underfill.

Special Requirements: Must possess and maintain a valid Arizona Driver’s License.
