Job Description

The duties listed below will be divided among the Senior Orientation Assistants.

SPRING DUTIES
  • Assist the Student Staff Coordinator in planning OA Training (30%)
  • Execute assigned pre-Summer OA Training tasks (20%)
  • Participate in Orientation Assistant Recruitment (10%)
  • Be present in Orientation Assistant interviews (10%)
  • Contribute to the hiring process of new Orientation Assistants (10%)
  • Partake in Senior Orientation Assistant Team Meetings (20%)

TRAINING DUTIES
  • Lead a team of assigned Orientation Assistants within the larger Orientation Assistant team (30%)
  • Provide mentorship to assigned Orientation Assistants (20%)
  • Serve as a point of communication between Orientation Assistants and full-time staff (10%)
  • Create and execute teambuilding activities with the Orientation Assistant team (20%)
  • Train Orientation Assistants in areas of expertise or areas of personal interest as they align with the Orientation Assistant training calendar (10%)
  • Greet presenters and campus partners as they arrive for training (10%)

SUMMER DUTIES
  • Conduct weekly check-ins with assigned Orientation Assistants to ensure the team feels confident and supported (i.e. self-care, personal well-being) (5%)
  • Manage and lead a student group of up to 30 incoming students during Orientation sessions (30%)
  • Facilitate small group discussions and provide pertinent information to incoming students about all things KU, including policies, procedures, involvement opportunities, campus resources, and more (30%)
  • Develop interpersonal communication skills through OA training and during the OA role (5%)
  • Provide excellent customer service throughout all portions of the Orientation and Transition process, including but not limited to Orientation sessions, Hawk Week, and at the OTP front desk (10%)
  • Leverage critical thinking skills through on-the-job adaptability (5%)
  • Engage and interface with incoming students, current students, parents & guests, and campus partners throughout Orientation and during the academic year (5%)
  • Receive and provide feedback on the OA role and experience with OTP staff and leadership (5%)
  • Utilize conflict management and delivery method changes when needed and appropriate (5%)

Required Qualifications

  1. Previous experience as an Orientation Assistant in Summer 2025
  2. Available Summer 2026
    • OAs are required to be present during OA training (excluding weekends and Memorial Day)
    • Summer Orientation Sessions
    • Hawk Week   
    • OAs are prohibited from taking in-person courses, but online enrollment is welcome in Summer 2026
  3. Record of punctuality and reliability in the Orientation Assistant role as demonstrated in the application materials
  4. Effective communication, organizational, and time management skills as demonstrated in the application materials
  5. Strong customer service skills as demonstrated in the application materials

Advertised Salary Range

$14.50 per hour

Position Overview

The primary function of a Senior Orientation Assistant is to serve in a leadership role during Orientation. Senior Orientation Assistants act as role models, assist with the planning and execution of training for the 2026-2027 Orientation Assistant team, and work toward the goal of assisting new students with their academic, social, and personal transition to the University of Kansas.

Position Requirements

During the semester term of the appointment, the student hourly must be enrolled in no fewer than 6 credit hours. For summer periods the student hourly must: (1) have been enrolled in no less than 6 hours in the past spring semester or (2) be pre-enrolled in the upcoming fall semester in no less than 6 hours or (3) be enrolled in summer session or (4) be admitted to study in the upcoming fall semester. Student Hourlies may be undergraduate or graduate students. (Exceptions granted for GRA/GTA/GA appointments DO NOT apply to Student Hourly appointments).

Employment Conditions

(1) Student employees are not eligible for remote work arrangements unless an exception is approved by the unit leadership and HR.

 

(2) This is an hourly/non-exempt position. A student employee cannot hold an hourly/non-exempt position and a salaried/exempt graduate or undergraduate position (GRA/GTA/GA/RUA/RGA) concurrently.
