Hastings College seeks a strategic and experienced Controller to lead the college's accounting and financial operations. As a key member of the financial leadership team, the Controller is responsible for ensuring the integrity of the college's financial records, preparing timely and accurate financial reports, and maintaining a robust system of internal controls. This individual will oversee the daily operations of the Business Office, including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and grant accounting, ensuring compliance with all applicable regulations and standards. The ideal candidate is a proactive leader dedicated to supporting the academic mission of the college through exceptional fiscal stewardship.

Responsibilities

  • Financial Reporting & Leadership: Oversee all aspects of the accounting cycle, including month-end and year-end closing, to prepare and present timely, accurate financial statements and analysis for senior leadership and the Board of Trustees in accordance with GAAP.

  • Audit & Tax Management: Lead the annual financial audit process from start to finish, including negotiating findings and developing management responses, while ensuring the timely and accurate preparation of all required tax filings (e.g., IRS Form 990).

  • Treasury & Cash Management: Manage key treasury functions, including cash flow forecasting, investment of cash balances, debt covenant compliance, and overseeing the collection and control of tuition and other college revenues.

  • Internal Controls & Policy: Establish, monitor, and enforce a robust system of internal controls, financial policies, and procedures to safeguard college assets, ensure regulatory compliance, and maintain the integrity of all financial systems.

  • Team Leadership & Operations: Lead, mentor, and supervise the Business Office team, overseeing daily operations including general accounting, payroll, accounts payable, and student accounts, while leveraging technology to drive process improvements.

  • Budgeting & Financial Planning: Collaborate with the CFO and senior leadership on the development, implementation, and ongoing monitoring of the college's annual operating budget, providing key financial analysis and variance reporting.

  • Grant & Foundation Accounting: Oversee all restricted fund accounting, including federal and state grants, and provide direct accounting support to the Hastings College Foundation to ensure compliance with donor and regulatory requirements for endowed funds.

Education & Experience:


  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance or Accounting is required.

  • A minimum of seven years of progressive experience in accounting or financial management, including supervisory experience.  

  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license is required.

  • Knowledge of GAAP, specifically nonprofit accounting standards

  • Knowledge of internal controls and compliance

  • Experience in an accounting organization within an institution of higher education or not for profit organization is preferred.  

  • MBA, CMA or similar advanced degree is preferred.
