Job Description

Our safety philosophy is simple—we want our employees to go home healthy and whole each day and as one of Avista’s safety experts, you’ll provide safety services and training support in all aspects of employee and process safety for our operations, corporate services and related public safety. In this role you’ll be part of a dynamic team who’s committed to continuous improvement, critical risk competence and organizational learning as we support a safe working environment.
 

You’ll have the opportunity to positively influence safety in the following ways:

Field Engagement & Culture Building
• Build trust and identify safety improvements through regular field presence.
• Encourage a questioning attitude and open sharing of near misses to foster psychological safety.
• Attend safety meetings, participate in safety committees and special project teams.

Safety Inspections & Hazard Mitigation
• Conduct regular site visits, safety observations, and facility inspections.
• Identify potential hazards and recommend corrective actions aligned with operational realities.

Incident Response & Customer Experience
• Respond to all incidents, support assessments and develop corrective actions.
• Develop trusted relationship with operations leadership and employees
• Support Operations Leadership during OSHA inspections and regulatory engagements.

Training & Coaching
• Partner with the Training Department to review and enhance safety-related training.
• Coach employees and leaders on safe work practices, ergonomics, and regulatory compliance.

Program Development & Compliance
• Develop and refine safety policies and procedures.
• Monitor compliance with OSHA, DOSH, DOT, and other standards.

Human & Organizational Performance (HOP) Integration
• Apply HOP principles to incident response, and safety program design.
• Promote holistic safety across worker, public, and process domains Ergonomics & Injury Prevention

Requirements

Safety Specialist:
  • Bachelor’s Degree with 3+ years relevant experience with broad exposure to safety regulations, ergonomics, body mechanics and industrial hygiene. Experience in an electric and gas utility environment preferred.
  • CSP, GSP, CHSP or CUSP certification a plus.
  • Proven track record of successfully delivering and supporting safety programs.
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills; ability to serve and collaborate with all levels of the organization.
  • Ability to train and coach on safety and health issues and serve as a trustworthy and dependable team member and safety advisor.
  • Experience with Human and Organizational Performance philosophy, specifically when it comes to supporting incident assessments.
  • An analytical and curious approach to complex issues and problem solving; flexibility and ability to manage multiple deadlines and fast-changing priorities
  • Proficient computer skills in Word, Excel and Power Point; additional computer skills, such as working with EHS software, analytics, etc. a plus.
Hiring Range: $84,939 - $110,421
Senior Specialist meets all the above requirements plus:
  • Five years’ relevant experience with broad exposure to safety regulations, ergonomics, body mechanics and industrial hygiene; experience in an electric and gas utility environment preferred.
  • Ability to write policy documents in a concise format for varying audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and with a team (both in office and virtually) with attention to detail and organizational abilities.
Hiring Range: $96,517 - $126,439

Other combinations of education and experience may be considered.

This position requires an in-person presence to support team and on-site responsibilities.
