  • Transportation Engineer I- Salary Grade: B24; Salary Range: $65,104 - $106,634 yearly
  • Transportation Engineer II- Salary Grade: B25; Salary Range: $69,572 - $114,099 yearly
  • Transportation Engineer III- Salary Grade: B26; Salary Range: $76,530 - $129,430 yearly
  • Transportation Specialist IV- Salary Grade: B27; Salary Range: $84,182 - $142,374 yearly

Transportation Engineer I: 

Performs transportation engineering work in one or more functional areas such as planning, project development and design, construction, transportation/traffic operations and/or maintenance. Ensures compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards and guidelines. Work requires contact with governmental officials and private entities. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.

Transportation Engineer II: 

Performs complex transportation engineering work in one or more functional areas such as planning, project development and design, construction, transportation/traffic operations and/or maintenance. Ensures compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards and guidelines. Work requires contact with governmental officials and private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

Transportation Engineer III: 

Performs advanced and complex transportation engineering work in one or more functional areas such as planning, project development and design, construction, transportation/traffic operations and/or maintenance. Ensures compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards and guidelines. Work requires contact with governmental officials and private entities. Employees at this level establish their own work plan and priorities to meet set objectives. Issues are rarely referred to the supervisor but are handled at the occurrence.

Transportation Engineer IV: 

Performs highly advanced and complex transportation engineering work in one or more functional areas such as planning, project development and design, construction, transportation/traffic operations and/or maintenance with primary focus on the district's bridge program. Ensures compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards and guidelines. Work requires contact with governmental officials and private entities. Employees at this level are virtually self-supervising and assume direct accountability for the work product.

Essential Duties:

Transportation Engineer I

  • Answers technical and policy questions related to bridge inspection and maintains bridge inspection data; analyzes data and provides summaries.
  • Reviews designed and detailed drawings of bridges and related structures prepared by other engineers and technicians.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

     

Transportation Engineer II and III

In addition to the above,

  • Assists districts with bridge inspection-related matters
  • Schedules, assigns and oversees bridge inspection activities.

     

  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

     

Transportation Engineer IV

In addition to the above,

  • Coordinates and/or monitors consultant contracts related projects.
  • Develops short-term and long-term goals and coordinates planning activities and resources required to meet goals.
  • Maintains a critical bridge list and coordinates with the Bridge Division, area engineers and other district staff on
    critical findings involving state-maintained bridges to have them posted, repaired and/or closed to the traveling public.
  • Monitors contract performance, evaluates contract deliverables, reviews billing documentation, monitors the consultant's
    compliance with the terms of the contract, and/or prepares and delivers a written evaluation of the consultant's performance
  • Performs highly advanced and complex engineering design work such as development of layouts, sketches, plans,
    specifications, estimates and contracts.
  • Performs, reviews and monitors detailed investigations, data collection, analyses and coordination of bridge related
    research and recommends cost effective project level design for new, rehabilitated and reconstructed bridges.
  • Recommends prioritization of bridge replacement, bridge rehabilitation and repair of damaged bridges.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education

Bachelor's Degree in engineering or related science bachelor's or higher degree accepted by TX PELS.

Experience

  • Transportation Engineer I: 4 years engineering, transportation engineering, or related engineering experience 
  • Transportation Engineer II: 5 years engineering, transportation engineering, or related engineering experience 
  • Transportation Engineer III: 6 years engineering, transportation engineering, or related engineering experience 
  • Transportation Engineer IV: 7 years engineering, transportation engineering, or related engineering experience 

(Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Related graduate level education may be substituted for experience on a year per year basisSubstitutions for Minimum Qualifications

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
  • Licensed Prof Engineer*

     

  • IMPORTANT: For Bridge Inspection: Must have completed a comprehensive training course based on the Bridge Inspector's Training Manual or NICET Level III or IV certification in Bridge Safety Inspection within (1) year of date of hire.

*Professional engineers licensed in another state in the United States, but not currently licensed in the State of Texas, must (1) meet the license requirements of the State of Texas Engineering Practices Act, (2) obtain a professional engineering license from the State of Texas within six (6) months of the date of hire, and (3) sign an agreement to that effect as a condition of employment.

Competencies:

Transportation Engineer I-III

  • Knowledge of:
    • Applicable governmental laws, rules and regulations specific to area of responsibility for safeguarding information and information technology related systems
    • Hydrologic, hydraulic and geotechnical design activities and principles
    • Standards and specification for bridges and other transportation structures
    • Bridge construction and evaluation methods, procedures and regulations
    • Program/project planning, development, and management methodologies
    • Maintenance concepts, methods, policies and requirements
  • Skill in:
    • Performing calculations to include material and labor estimates, expenses, technical survey data and engineering
      calculations
    • Applying engineering principles, practices, and methods in job responsibilities

       

Transportation Engineer IV

In addition to the above, must demonstrate proficient skill in

  • Coordinating and directing multiple projects

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions
  • Light work: Lift up to 20 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 10 lbs
  • Walking: moving on foot to accomplish tasks; long distance/from one work site to another
  • Close Visual Acuity- work includes data/figures; view a computer screen; extensive reading
