Gardner-Webb University is seeking to fill the position of Academic Advisor and Success Coach. The position of Academic Advisor and Success Coach will advise a growing population of traditional undergraduate students. This position uses coaching techniques to assist students with barriers to learning, setting educational goals and connecting students to university resources.  Please review the details below for information regarding job functions, minimum requirement and application instructions.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

- Serves as primary advisor of record for assigned group of undergraduate students

- Provides academic coaching to assist with identifying, developing, and implementing learning strategies and study skills specific to course requirements

- Refers students to appropriate academic staff and support resources and collaborates with others to monitor and accelerate the academic progress of the students referred

- Monitors and contacts students who have not registered each semester

- Contacts and intervenes with students who have been referred as having excessive absences and accumulating low grades, and any student deemed academically high-risk

- Helps with outreach for students on caseload that have unpaid financial balances

- Provides training for degree completion planning and GPA calculations for students

- Assists students on academic warning with academic success plans

- Advises program requirements, course selection, and registration procedures to both prospective and current student populations

- Contributes to new initiatives related to student success (e.g., campus workshops, faculty trainings, etc.)

- Provides guidance to students on university policy and academic requirements

- Other duties assigned by Division leadership


SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Interns/ Student Employees, as needed


EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: Bachelor’s Degree in education or related field; 2 years related work or training is preferred. Experience as a student peer mentor or advising assistant is preferred.


OTHER PREFERED QUALIFICATIONS: Proficiency with information technology (Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, campus-wide database), as well as an understanding of the college student experience and best practices that foster their success/retention. Willingness to contribute to Gardner-Webb University’s Christian mission, as well as the Division of Student Success’ guiding values of access, empowerment, inclusivity, partnership, and growth. Understanding of learning environments and the challenges that college students often face (i.e., attrition risk factors). Strong relational skills, including professional and customer-friendly skills; the ability to function in a team environment; a strong work ethic and a positive attitude. Ability to handle confidential information professionally.
