JOB SUMMARY

This entry-level position supports the City of Cooper City’s communications and marketing efforts by helping to capture, share, and promote City programs, projects, services, and community events. The Communications Generalist assists with content creation for social media, the City’s website, e-newsletters, and other communication platforms. The position is suited for an energetic and creative individual who is eager to develop storytelling skills while working directly with City staff, elected officials, and residents. Work is performed under the direct supervision of the Director of Communications/Public Information Officer.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS (examples, not all-inclusive)

  • Attends City programs and events, often during evenings, weekends, and certain holidays, to capture photos and videos.
  • Creates and publishes engaging content for social media platforms, e-newsletters, and the City website.
  • Assists with producing flyers, graphics, and digital materials to promote City programs, services, and initiatives.
  • Helps plan and maintain the City’s social media calendar, ensuring timely and consistent posting.
  • Contributes to highlighting projects, initiatives, and community members through digital storytelling.
  • Works with City departments to ensure accurate information and consistent formatting across the City website.
  • Monitors social media activity and provides input on content ideas to strengthen community engagement.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree.
  • Current enrollment in, or interest in pursuing, a degree in Communications, Marketing, Journalism, Public Relations, or a related field preferred.
  • Experience with social media platforms, photography, or video production is desirable.
  • Possess or be able to obtain a valid State of Florida driver’s license by the date of hire.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • High energy, creativity, and enthusiasm to learn and grow in the communications field.
  • Interest in developing storytelling, photography, and video skills.
  • Basic knowledge of social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, X/Twitter, YouTube, etc.) and how to create engaging content.
  • Familiarity with design tools such as Canva; knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Premiere) is a plus.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Attention to detail and organization.
  • Ability to interact effectively with City staff, elected officials, community partners, and residents.

PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS

Tasks involve the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work, which may involve lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling objects and materials of light weight. Tasks may involve extended periods of standing and walking during a public event. Work will be performed in both office and outdoor settings.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Office and outdoor setting. Work requires attendance at evening, weekend, and holiday meetings, events, or programs.
