Qualifications:
- To qualify for a certificate as a general supervisor of a licensed laboratory, a person must, except as otherwise provided in this section, be:
(a) A qualified physician serving on behalf of the director; or
(b) A clinical laboratory technologist who has had at least 3 years of experience in a laboratory as a full-time employee working at least 30 hours per week, of which at least 2 years have been spent working at the level of a technologist:
(1) In a licensed laboratory or a laboratory of a hospital, university or health department; and
(2) Under the supervision of a director who possesses a doctoral degree.
Job Duties:
- Performs bench work as needed.
- Is accessible to testing personnel at all times testing is performed to provide on-site, telephone, or electronic support.
- Provides day-to-day supervision of personnel performing testing.
- Must be on-site to provide direct supervision when testing is performed.
- Monitors test analyses and specimen examinations to ensure that acceptable levels of analytic performance are maintained including quality control, calibration and maintenance.
- Fulfills certain responsibilities if delegated by the laboratory director or technical supervisor, such as:
- Resolving technical problems and ensuring remedial actions are taken whenever test systems deviate from the laboratory’s established performance specifications.
- Ensuring patient test results are not reported until all corrective action has been taken and the test system is functioning properly.
- Providing orientation to all testing personnel.
- Annually evaluating and documenting the performance of all testing personnel.
- Maintains Standard Operating Procedures up to date.
- Involved in the hiring of personnel and make sure they have the necessary education and experience.
- Evaluates the volume of testing performed, the number of testing personnel and turn-around-times to ensure adequate personnel are available.
- Assures that personnel are provided with adequate training for the duties and testing that they will be performing.
- Assures that personnel competency reviews are completed every six months for first year and annually thereafter. This should include observation of personnel as they perform procedural steps in the pre-analytic, analytic and post-analytic phases of testing.
- Assures that personnel perform proficiency testing per SOP and reports results within the required date.
- Requires and provides remedial training when needed.
- Conducts performance evaluations for departmental staff.
- Works with vendors to bring new analyzers and methods online.
- Reviews payroll, incident, accident, and corrected reports.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
