Role Overview

The Portland Mercury is seeking a creative and strategic Social Media Manager to grow and engage our audience across multiple platforms. This role emphasizes developing and executing social media strategies, reporting on performance, and ensuring our voice resonates with Portland’s unique culture. The manager will also oversee content creation, including some video production, but the primary focus will be on building strategy, engagement, and reporting. This position works closely with both the editorial and sales teams to align audience development with journalistic and revenue goals.


Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute social media strategies that increase reach, engagement, and loyalty across platforms (Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, Facebook, Bluesky, etc.).
  • Monitor audience insights, analytics, and trends to inform strategy and adapt approaches.
  • Collaborate with editorial teams to package reporting into platform-optimized posts, headlines, and visuals.
  • Partner with the sales team to support branded content initiatives while maintaining editorial integrity.
  • Shoot, edit, and publish video content as part of broader social strategy, with an emphasis on short-form storytelling.
  • Track, analyze, and report on performance metrics to inform internal teams and guide content decisions.
  • Engage directly with audiences through comments, shares, and conversation, maintaining the Mercury’s humor and cultural sensibility.
  • Ensure consistency in tone, style, and messaging across all social media channels.

Requirements

  • Strong background in social media management with proven experience growing and engaging audiences.
  • Expertise in analyzing performance data and turning insights into actionable strategies.
  • Knowledge of social platform best practices, algorithms, and trends.
  • Skilled at writing, editing, and packaging content for multiple platforms.
  • Familiarity with creating short-form video content (Reels, TikToks, Shorts) and ability to collaborate with editorial/video contributors.
  • Proficiency with tools like Adobe Premiere, Illustrator, Photoshop, or similar is a plus.
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills with the ability to juggle multiple projects.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, creativity, and a sense of humor.

Additional Information:
This is a full-time, exempt position with flexibility for remote and in-office work. The typical schedule is Monday through Friday, with occasional evening or weekend coverage depending on social media needs.
