The Payments Product Chapter Area Lead (CAL) is a pivotal Executive Manager role responsible for building modern customer-centric product management practices across the Payments Domain. This role will champion product excellence, foster talent, and help ensure our payments products deliver outstanding customer and commercial outcomes. The CAL will have high visibility within the Payments LT, and each of our product crews.

The Payments Domain sits within Business Banking, and is responsible for CBA’s account-to-account payments products for all customer segments. These include the NPP, BPAY, Direct Entry, RTGS, and International Money Transfers. The Payments Domain is also responsible for the Groups business cash solutions such as Quick Cash Bags. Further, the Payments Domain leads CBA’s group-wide payments strategy, advocacy, and industry representation.

Do work that matters

As CAL you will work to strengthen, engage and support the payments product chapters to improve how we deliver products and services that customers love:

  • Strengthen: bring an exceptional understanding of modern product management practices aligned with the Silicon Valley Product Group model (or similar), and help our product managers and squads learn and utilise these practices.

  • Engage: foster connection, engagement, and collaboration across the ~40-50 product managers in payments, and into the broader Group-wide product practice.

  • Support: partner with Crew Leads to develop and retain product talent, manage succession plans, and recruit high-performing product managers.

You will report directly to the General Manager, Strategy & Relationship Pricing, and work closely with Product Management Chapter Leads (who will have an indirect reporting line to you), Crew Leads, and cross-functional teams across the Group.

Your responsibilities in this role will include:

Your primarily responsibility is to build a high-performance product practices within the Payments Domain, underpinned by the principles of modern, customer-centric, product management. You will fulfil this responsibility by:

  • Inspiring product managers and squads about the potential of product management skills to unlock innovation, customer outcomes, personal growth, and broader opportunities.

  • Working with product managers to develop and articulate a compelling strategy, vision, and CVP for their products, informed by market and competitive analysis, customer insights, data, and commercial imperatives.

  • Coaching squads and crews to embed the product model into how they discover and deliver products, for example by engaging the full squad in customer research and product discovery.

  • Advocating for customer-centricity, ensuring customer needs are at the heart of product development and decision-making, and that product teams have regular customer engagement throughout the product development lifecycle.

  • Understanding the Payments Leadership Team’s annual and quarterly priorities, and planning talent and capability development to support execution of those priorities.

  • Building our focus on achieving strong commercial outcomes from payments products, by way of growth in market share, direct and indirect revenue, and profitability.

  • Constructively challenging product roadmaps, to prioritise the most critical high-value features and reorient around accelerated delivery of customer outcomes.

  • Representing the Payments Domain at product forums, facilitating bilateral flow of information to ensure Payments adopts the best thinking and approaches from across the Group.

  • Facilitating people development, succession planning, and talent management, building capability and fostering a culture of continuous improvement for the ~40-50 product managers across the Payments Domain.

  • Building connection and culture across product chapters, promoting collaboration, knowledge sharing, and professional growth.

  • Ensuring deep understanding of the regulatory environment and risk culture, embedding compliance and risk management into product development and delivery.

We are interested in hearing from people who have:

  • 7 - 10+ years professional experience, ideally including roles in banking or finance, at modern product-centric technology companies, and/or in product consulting.

  • Experience with payments products, potentially including cards, acquiring, domestic and international.

  • Proven track record across both new and established products, and demonstrating strong customer and commercial performance.

  • Deep understanding of modern product management practices, including design, discovery, strategy, prioritisation.

  • Love of coaching and developing people to grow and achieve their best, including setting objectives and standards, delivering feedback, motivating and engaging teams, and recruiting talent.

  • Strong communication skills, including the ability to inspire colleagues and deliver clear and effective messages.

  • Ability to build strong relationships, and influence with integrity to achieve outcomes, and constructively challenge up and down the organisation.

  • University degree qualification in relevant field.
