Recruitment Number 25-221KS, Appellate Court Clerk (Intermediate Court of Appeals), SR-20C ($5,133 per month) to SR-20M ($7,603 per month)*, Honolulu, Oahu.

*The starting salary may be at a rate between the minimum to maximum salary range listed above, based on qualifications.

Position Duties

This position is located within the Intermediate Court of Appeals (ICA).  The ICA hears all appeals from trial court and administrative agency decisions as allowed by law.  
This position independently reviews, analyzes and processes appellate court documents to ensure compliance to court rules and orders, and statutory and procedural requirements.  In addition, the position provides confidential administrative and clerical support services to the ICA Staff Attorney's Office and the Chief Judge's office.

Minimum Qualifications

Education Requirement: Graduation from high school. Excess experience of the type and quality described below or work experience requiring the ability to read, comprehend, and apply written directions, or a high degree of verbal skill may be substituted for education on a year-for-year basis.

General Experience: Two (2) years progressively responsible general clerical work experience.

Specialized Experience: Four (4) years of court work experience which included work dealing with the preparation of legal and/or court documents and forms.

Of the four (4) years of Specialized Experience at least one (1) year of work experience must have involved the preparation of court documents and forms for an appellate court which included opinions, decisions, and sanction orders. Such experience must have also included the checking of citations and references, and summarizing and digesting legal document information.
 

OR

Of the four (4) years of Specialized Experience at least two (2) years of work experience must have involved the preparation and/or processing of court documents and forms for a circuit court. Such experience must have been comparable to the work performed at the Courts Document Clerk, Circuit Court Clerk II, or Estate and Guardianship Specialist levels and included summarizing and digesting legal document information.

Skill Requirement: Type at a rate of 40 net words per minute.

The applicant's proficiency may be evaluated by the appointing authority. Failure to meet the proficiency requirements may result in suspension of the applicant's eligibility. Judiciary Human Resources reserves the right to test an applicant when there is evidence that the applicant does not meet the proficiency requirements for the class for which the applicant applied.

Substitutions Allowed:

a. Graduation from an accredited community college, business or technical school above the high school level with a major in the stenographic or secretarial field may be substituted for one (1) year of the General Experience requirement.

b. Graduation from an accredited Legal Assistant/Paralegal training program may only be substituted for one (1) year of the Specialized Experience requirement.

c. Graduation from an accredited university or college with a baccalaureate degree may only be substituted for two (2) years of the Specialized Experience requirement.

d. Graduation from an accredited School of Law may only be substituted for three (3) years of the Specialized Experience requirement.

Note: The above substitutions for Specialized Experience do not include substitution for the required one (1) year of appellate court or two (2) years of circuit court Specialized Experience.
