About the Department

The Food Pantry Assistant will handle dry goods and provide food supports to individuals accessing the Adult Social Services Department Food Bank Program. Incumbent will sort dry good and perishable items.

Position Duties

  1. Distribute food items to individuals accessing the food support program.
  2. Prepare food distribution room - sort and stack items in an orderly manner on the shelves.
  3. Ensure product quality through proper sorting techniques.
  4. Ensure food distribution room and all storage space is clean and tidy each day.
  5. Ensure the sorting area is safe maintain clear walkways and exits.
  6. Unload donated items from the vehicle upon arrival.
  7. Use correct body mechanics while lifting heavy items.
  8. Ensure personal hygiene and cleanliness.
  9. Ensure all interactions with individuals are maintain with confidentiality; except where required by law to report.
  10. Perform other duties of a similar nature or level as requested by supervisor or director.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge of:

  • Distribute food items to individuals accessing the food support program;
  • Prepare food distribution room - sort and stack items in an orderly manner on the shelves;
  • Ensure product quality through proper sorting techniques;
  • Ensure food distribution room and all storage space is clean and tidy each day; 
  • Ensure the sorting area is safe maintain clear walkways and exits; 
  • Unload donated items from the vehicle upon arrival; 
  • Use correct body mechanics while lifting heavy items;
  • Ensure personal hygiene and cleanliness;
  • Ensure all interactions with individuals are maintained with confidentiality except where required by law to report;
  • Yaqui culture, customs, resources and traditions and/or a willingness to learn.

Skills and Abilities:
  • Express compassion and empathy for those living on a low income;
  • Excellent customer service skills;
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills;
  • Basic understanding of English language;
  • Lift up to 20 lbs. of weight several times during the shift;
  • Good mobility required for bending and reaching etc.;
  • Ability and willingness to work in a team environment;
  • Operate a variety of office equipment, including a computer and related software applications;
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with co-workers, supervisor, management, Council members, and the public. Have ability to sufficiently exchange or convey information and receive verbal and written work instructions.

Other Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED: or, an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.

Special Requirements:

  • Must possess and maintain a valid Arizona Driver's License; 
  • This position will require the incumbent to work non-traditional hours, nights, and weekends; 
  • Must have a current Level 1 Arizona Clearance Card or be able to obtain the Level 1 Arizona Clearance Card within ninety (90) days of hire. Failure to maintain a current Level 1 Clearance Card will result in termination.
