National Children’s Center, Inc. is a nonprofit organization that is one of the region’s largest non-governmental providers of services for individuals with developmental disabilities, offering an array of services to infants, toddlers, preschoolers, and adults in the Washington metropolitan area. SUMMARY: The Prep Cook works in our Early Learning Center kitchen and serves breakfast and lunch to 200 children and staff Monday-Friday. They are responsible for setting up kitchen workstations and preparing ingredients for the cooking process. The prep cook performs basic cooking duties, monitors stock levels, and takes on culinary tasks as they arise. A successful prep cook shall understand and comply with all food and sanitation guidelines and regulations.
SCHEDULE & LOCATION: This position is located at our Early Learning Center on Martin Luther King, Jr. Ave in Southeast Washington, DC (Ward 8). The hours are Monday-Friday 6:30am to 2:30pm (40 hours/week).
PAY RATE: $18.20 per hour
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Setting up and sanitizing workstations.
- Preparing a variety of meats and other food items, as well as measuring ingredients and seasonings.
- Wash, peel, cut, seed fruits, vegetables, and meats to prepare them for consumption.
- Promptly reports equipment and food quality or shortage problems to Food Service Manager.
- Knows and complies consistently with the State and Federal standard portion sizes, cooking methods, quality standards, NCC’s kitchen rules, recipes, policies, and procedures.
- Stocks and maintains sufficient levels of food products at line stations to assure a smooth service period.
- Regularly maintain a clean and sanitary work area, to include but not limited to sweeping, mopping dishwashing and trash removal.
- Assist other cooks during special events
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must possess a positive attitude and work well with other team members.
- Must be able to read and follow an unsupervised recipe.
- Must be able to communicate clearly with supervisors, managers, and kitchen staff.
- Be able to reach, bend, stoop and frequently lift to 40 pounds.
- Be able to work in a standing position for long periods of time (up to 8 hours).
- Follow direction and ask questions for clarification if needed
- Ability to work an 8-hour shift Monday to Friday with occasional overtime for special events
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- High School Diploma or GED is required
- 1 - 2 yrs. experience working in a similar position in a cafeteria, restaurant, or hotel
- Food handler’s certification required
- Basic computer skills
