Job Description:
The Mechanical Automation Engineer will be responsible for the design, development, and integration of mechanical components and systems for custom automation solutions. This includes designing fixtures, robotic end-of-arm tooling, machine frames, and motion systems, as well as collaborating with electrical and controls teams to ensure seamless system performance. This role requires a hands-on, detail-oriented engineer who is passionate about solving complex problems and building innovative systems for real-world production environments.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design custom mechanical systems and assemblies for automation equipment, including tooling, fixtures, robotic cells, and mechanical sub-systems.
- Create 3D CAD models and 2D drawings using SolidWorks (or similar CAD software).
- Develop and maintain Bills of Materials (BOMs), assembly instructions, and technical documentation.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams (controls, electrical, project management, sales) to define requirements and deliver complete solutions.
- Ensure mechanical designs meet functional requirements, manufacturability standards, safety codes, and ergonomic guidelines.
- Participate in design reviews, prototyping, testing, and system integration.
- Support the fabrication, assembly, and installation phases of automation projects.
- Provide on-site support for system commissioning, troubleshooting, and customer training when needed.
- Research and apply new materials, components, and technologies to improve system performance and cost-effectiveness.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or equivalent experience in a related field.
- 3+ years of experience in mechanical design, preferably in an automation, robotics, or industrial equipment environment.
- Proficiency in 3D CAD software (SolidWorks preferred); experience with PDM is a plus.
- Strong understanding of machine design, motion systems, pneumatics, and mechanical actuators.
- Experience working with manufacturing processes such as machining, welding, sheet metal fabrication, and assembly.
- Familiarity with robotic systems (e.g., FANUC, UR, ABB) and end-of-arm tooling design.
- Working knowledge of safety and ergonomic standards for industrial automation.
- Strong problem-solving, communication, and project coordination skills.
- Willingness to travel occasionally for customer support and system installations.
- Experience in a fast-paced, custom automation environment.
- Exposure to GD&T, FEA tools, or simulation software.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to work in a manufacturing environment with moderate noise levels.
