About the Department

This position is responsible for assisting in the operations and maintenance of the County's wastewater treatment plants and the county's water distribution system.

Applicants with a Class II, Class III or non-licensed status will receive consideration at lower-level classifications and salary grades/ranges. 

The hiring range for this position, depending upon qualifications, is as follows:

  • $50,366 - $65,000 for applicants with a Commonwealth of Virginia Class II Wastewater Operator's License and a Commonwealth of Virginia Class IV Water Operator's License. 
  • $47,968 - $62,000 for applicants with a Commonwealth of Virginia Class III Wastewater Operator's License and a Commonwealth of Virginia Class V Water Operator's License or hold a bachelor's degree in biological, chemical, or engineering Science or related field and one year of related experience.
  • $45,684 - for non-licensed applicants will start as an Unlicensed Operator.
Through the career development plan, Unlicensed Operators, and operators with licensees with lower than a Class I license will receive salary increases after passing higher license exams and establishing minimum tenure requirements.  Unlicensed applicants will be required to obtain licensing within thirty (30) months from date of hire.

Position Duties

  •  Makes process control decisions for permitted effluent discharge.
  •  Ensures compliance with safe work policies and procedures.
  •  Performs equipment checks and general equipment maintenance.
  •  Collects samples; performs laboratory analyses to ensure that treatment facilities are   operating efficiently; carries out corrective actions.
  •  Makes rounds of plants; reads gauges and meters; records readings.
  •  Maintains maintenance and chemical analysis records; prepares logs, records, and       reports, including required local, state, and federal reports.
  •  Responds to after-hours emergencies when on call.
  •  Prepares a variety of regular and special reports.
  •  Attends required training classes.
  •  Operates a truck and fork-lift.
  •  Performs related duties.

Other Qualifications

  • The Utilities Operations Superintendent assigns work in terms of general instructions.  The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the results.
